Katherine Liontas-Warren
'Benson's Cacti' by Katherine Liontas-Warren, Plein Air, Oil on Panel Painting

2023

About the Item

This 6.375" x 8.25" oil on panel painting is by Oklahoma artist, Katherine Liontas-Warren. This painting exhibits an expressive, impressionistic technique, characterized by visible, dynamic brushstrokes and an emphasis on color over linear definition. The composition is dominated by a lush arrangement of cacti and flora. The artist employs a rich, varied palette, with warm hues of yellow, orange, and pink juxtaposed against cool greens to create vibrancy and visual contrast. The brushwork is gestural and layered, demonstrating an impasto technique where thick applications of paint add a tangible texture to the canvas. The work is framed and floated within a bronze border. Katherine Liontas-Warren has been a resident of Oklahoma since 1984, where she taught printmaking, drawing and watercolor for 37 years as professor of art at Cameron University. She retired in May 2021 to pursue art as a full-time professional artist and received my Master of Fine Art from Texas Tech University and a Bachelor of Science from Southern Connecticut State University. In 2014, she received the Oklahoma Governor's Art and Education Award in Oklahoma City, and was awarded 'Artist of the Year' by the Paseo Art Association in Oklahoma City. She has exhibited her art in over 400 National Solo, Invitational and Juried Competitive Exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad, and has received numerous purchase and juried awards. Through her preferred mediums of gouache, watercolor, and printmaking, she addresses the metaphors of romance and dynamic and imagined seascapes. These metaphors, although personal and unique, are seen and understood as images associated with the aspect of movement. The continual painterly flow of the sea and the patterns found in her lino prints represent the rhythms found in nature. The romance of a sunset during a storm of waves narrates the passage of time as she observes life and strides forward to celebrate change. Her prints and drawings are in permanent collections in museums and institutions throughout the nation such as Austin Peay University, Arkansas Art Center, The Wichita Falls Museum of Art at Midwestern University, Oklahoma State University, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, University of Colorado, University of North Dakota, Oklahoma Art Institute: Quartz Mountain Lodge, Del Mar College, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Whitman College in Walla Walla, Butler Community College in Kansas, University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, Leslie Powell Art Foundation Gallery, Milwaukee Museum of Art, Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art, and Nicolls State University. The Museum of Texas Tech University recently acquired 86 works for the Artist Printmaker Research Collection. This collection represents the documentation of American artist printmakers.

L’embarquement by Gaston La Touche
By Gaston La Touche
Located in New Orleans, LA
Gaston La Touche 1854 - 1913 French L’embarquement The Embarkment Signed "Gaston La Touche" (lower right) Oil on panel A fashionable group of merrymakers boards a rowboat at sundown in this oil on panel by renowned French painter Gaston La Touche. Softly lit and lushly detailed, the work represents the artist’s talent for capturing the gaiety of the Belle Époque. With its luminous coloring and feathery brushwork, this oil evokes the style and joie de vivre of the era rendered in La Touche’s distinctive, mature style. Fresh and airy, the work is a beautiful example of the artist’s skill at capturing the subtle qualities of light and color. Set against the plein air backdrop of a wooded pond awash in the soft glow of the golden hour, the scene reflects the influence of the Impressionists. The subject also recalls works by Manet, Monet and Renoir, who delighted in depictions of modern leisure among the expanding middle class. The scene is an informal one, and its unconventional cropping suggests that the viewer is invited to take a seat in the boat and join the group on their outing. Such relaxed, inviting scenes were remarkably popular among contemporary, modern audiences. However, La Touche's style is singular, possessing an element of fantasy and romance that set him apart from the Impressionists. Gaston La Touche was born in St. Cloud, outside of Paris, in 1854, and he showed a keen interest in art from a young age. At ten years old, he began taking private art instruction, which lasted until 1870, when his family was forced to flee to Normandy amid the Franco-Prussian War. This was the only formal art training La Touche would ever receive. Despite his lack of Academy training, he made his debut at the Paris Salon of 1875 with a sculptural medallion and etchings, and he exhibited his first painting at the Salon of 1881. Although he began his career painting dark-toned realist compositions, by 1890, his style had shifted to what would become his signature — a lighter, brighter, idealistic society world. The artist was associated with practically all of the most influential artists and thinkers of late 19th century France, including Édouard Manet, Edgar Degas, Émile Zola, who frequently met at the legendary Cafe de la Nouvelle Athenes to share their thoughts on modern society. In 1900, he was named a Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur and an Officer in 1909. Additionally, he was well-decorated at the grand...
