A Winter’s Day
Oil on canvas, signed
Image size: 23.5 inches x 32.5 inches
Size including frame: 30.5 inches x 39.5 inches
This winter landscape painting by Louis Smets is of figures skating on frozen river next to a town. The architecture suggests the location could be Belgium where the artist is known to have visited.
Louis Smets or Smits was a Dutch painter who was probably born in the Netherlands sometime during the 1830’s. However, some sources suggest he also had strong connections to Antwerp in Belgium. He became popular for his animated winter landscapes, often featuring figures near frozen lakes and waterways. Many of his works include the distinctive rural Dutch farmhouses and buildings of the time.
Although little is known about his life, his work demonstrates his artistic ability and it is highly likely he was tutored by a painting master. He took his influences from Dutch artists such as Nicholas Johannes Roosenboom (1805-1880) and Frederick Marinus Kreuseman (1816-1882).
Smets was known to work around the Polder area of Holland as well as Belgium. He was active from around 1852 until 1896 which was probably around the time of his death.
Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.

A Winter’s Evening
Oil on canvas, signed
Image size: 11.5 inches x 23.25 inches
Size including frame: 16.25 inches x 28 inches
A beautiful winter landscape scene of a village covered in snow at sunset. A mother and son carry firewood back to their nearby cottage whilst other figures continue on home past the lake. In the distance, a church spire is silhouetted against the warm colours of the disappearing sun.
Nils or Niels Hans Christiansen was a well-accomplished painter born in Esbjerg in the Jutland peninsula of southwest Denmark on 22 July, 1850. He specialised in winter landscapes and moonlight scenes and was interested in the effects of light, often painting the sunrise and sunsets against his native land.
He first came to England in 1863 for the Royal Wedding of the Prince of Wales and Princess Alexandria. Although he worked mainly in Denmark and Norway, he spent some time in England where he is believed to have exhibited with many of the leading art galleries in London. In addition to exhibiting in England, Christiansen also exhibited in his home country at the Royal Academy of Copenhagen where he became a member.
He seems to have settled in England and on 10 September 1887 he married Alice Dickens at York Square, Stepney. Together the couple lived at 36 Dempsey Street, Mile End with their children. One of their sons, Albert Edward Christiansen (1887-1927) also became an artist. Christiansen’s success brought him royal connections and he was given a Grace and Favour apartment at Windsor by Queen Victoria. By 1901, he had become a British subject and had moved to 15 Queens Road in Plaistow, West Ham where he spent the rest of his life. He died in 1922 at Plaistow, aged 71.
His paintings are always beautifully drawn and with the inclusion of figures give added interest to the viewer. A number of his works can be found in museums and art collections in England including Epping Forest...

Image size: 23 inches x 41 inches
Size including frame: 29.75 inches x 47.75 inches
A beautifully painted marine scene of a boat being launched from a Dutch shore by Pieter Cornelis Dommersen. In the foreground, fishermen can be seen heaving a boat into the water as others look on. Beyond the beach, a number of ships are shown moored next to a windmill whilst further ships are depicted sailing around the harbour.
Pieter Cornelis Dommersen was born Pieter Cornelis Dommershuizen or Dommerhershuisen on 6 December, 1833 in Utrecht, Holland. Little is known about his father and he appears to have been brought up solely by his mother Cornelia into an artistic family. His younger brother was the artist Cornelis Christian...

Dutch Winter landscape with children playing on the ice by Per Wickenberg, 1839
Located in Stockholm, SE
Per Wickenberg was a Swedish artist active in the early 19th century.
He was only 34 when he died of tuberculosis; thankfully for the art history - at that point, he had practised the art of painting for more than 20 years.
After his art studies at the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm, he left Stockholm and travelled to Paris in 1837.
In Paris, he finally received the well-deserved success for his landscapes; he won golden medals at the Salon de Paris both in 1838 for his painting "Nordiskt vinterlandskap" and in 1839 for a painting called "Vinterfiske".
Per received a travel scholarship from Sweden and used that money for trips to Belgium and the Netherlands.
Our painting is from that time, the time after his success in Paris, and in this magnificent painting, we see his talent in capturing the cold winter mood with meticulous care of details.
Notice how nicely painted the children are on the ice, the sledge filled with hay to provide comfort and insulation against the cold.
In the background, we can see an ice skater, a detail that gives the painting depth and three-dimensionality.
This is a wonderful painting by a talented artist - who devoted almost his entire life to the art of painting.
