About the Item
Nocturn IV is a unique painting by contemporary artist Lumi Mizutani. The painting is made with Japanese pigments and gold leaves on Japanese paper mounted on panel. This artwork is a diptych composed of two wood panels of 65.2 cm x 50 cm (25.7 × 19.7 in); the two panels are joined and the total dimensions are 65.2 cm × 100 cm (25.7× 39.3 in). The artwork is signed, sold unframed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
In this series of figurative paintings, Lumi Mizutani offers a poetic homage to the Japanese landscape, focusing in particular on iconic locations such as Higashiyama-ku, the garden of the Honpo-ji temple in Kyoto, and Ueno in Tokyo.
By revisiting these places through different seasons and moments of the day, the artist transforms them into timeless visual impressions. Plum and cherry blossoms, pine trees, and weeping willows are recurring elements in her compositions—nature, especially trees, plays a central role in her work.
This body of work is distinguished by Mizutani’s signature technique, which blends traditional India ink with delicate touches of color. The use of gold, copper, and silver leaf further enhances the ethereal atmosphere of her paintings, imbuing each piece with a luminous, almost spiritual quality.

Lumi Mizutani
Painter and lithographer, Lumi Mizutani draws her inspiration from traditional Chinese and Japanese painting techniques. Her ink drawings and her paintings extend this tradition, and, through constant experimentation, carry her towards new horizons. For a few years now Lumi Mizutani’s work has revolved around the duality between abstract and figurative, black and colour, the spontaneity of the gesture (the ink painting) and the patient composition work (the painting with pigment). Thanks to these antagonisms she finds the necessary and complementary resources to express herself. “I felt the desire to introduce colors, especially Japanese color pigments, familiar to my childhood. Japanese painting thus entered my artistic expression and my life. While respecting the ancestral techniques and codes, I strive to create a personal and contemporary footprint that challenges the viewer by the emotion it arouses.“
