About the Item

Marein Konijn won the "Prix de Norvège" together with Esther Schlebos in 2019 when she graduated. Her landscapes show a silence and tonal calm. Thanks to this prize she recently made a study trip to Norway, and this will certainly result in the beautiful and vast nature of this country being reflected in her work. For the time being, we see in her work the landscapes from the area where she lives and works. More than a year ago I drove through the Groningen countryside in the autumn. It had just rained and the world was gray and gray. The harvest had been brought in and the heavy agricultural machines had compressed the Groningen soil. Large puddles of rainwater lingered on the land for far too long, like large mirrors reflecting the mood of the sky. Whimsical, but light can also be seen between the grays and blues in those mirrors. That light next to that heavy dark clay and the remains of the harvest, beautiful to see. I had arrived at the corn maze, a place where I played a lot with my children. It looked unrecognizable after the harvest. This world fascinated me enormously. I wanted to put the rain, the reflections, the contrasts in the deserted environment and the memory of what once was, that I wanted to put on my canvases. Sometimes I come to places, like the corn maze, where nature takes a walk with me. The beauty that I see then, I feel small about it. I take those places to my studio, I struggle with them and try to capture them on my canvases. Sometimes the brush strokes slip by themselves and I lose myself in the world on my canvases. I love that, being so absorbed in the work that is created by my own hands that the rest no longer matters. Sometimes I make up scenes in my paintings. The reality in my work is never far away. I like dark. Not that I necessarily want to make dramatic works, but I often end there. I feel comfortable with that. I do not strive to accurately reproduce the world around me, but more to a certain atmosphere that holds the viewer in its grip. When that happens I am moved myself. Because I enjoy being able to make something with paint that touches someone else.
