Françoise’s Garden is an original painting by Mary Chaplin. This large diptych is inspired by moments spent with a friend painting outdoors on a sunny summer’s day in my garden. This impressionistic painting is bright, vibrant , full of life. Its impressive size invites one to be immersed in the atmosphere it creates.
Mary Chaplin is a French artist and lives and works in Wailly, a picturesque hamlet surrounded by ponds, rivers and woods, in the North of France. Mary Chaplin for more than twenty years has worked as a self-taught professional artist, always inspired by nature and by the varying effects of light. She started her career by painting figurative scenes she saw around her in the French countryside. Her first artworks were representations of landscapes, gardens, forests, rivers or lakes, which allowed her to explore different techniques, including pastel, oil, acrylic and watercolour. However, both her life and career reached a turning point in 2005 when she witnessed the ‘holy light’ in a chapel she was visiting; she was deeply touched and inspired by the beauty of the reflections coming from the stained-glass windows, and thus she started painting them, calling them her ‘reflections’, or, in French, ‘méditations’. After that experience in the chapel, her will to convey the ephemeral nature of the light she captures, and its soothing warmth, became stronger. This new artistic birth enabled her to follow new paths in which she explores light’s numerous and ever changing facets. This deeply influenced her artistic style and work as it gave them a new dimension, shifting from a figurative representation of light in landscapes and still life to an abstract and more personal and metaphorical interpretation and appropriation of light’s fugacity. Since her beginnings, artist and painter Mary Chaplin’s work has been published in several article in the press and in specialized art magazines. It also has been broadcasted on television and is regularly exhibited in festivals dedicated to sacred art as well as in art galleries throughout different countries, including France, Belgium and England.

Mary Chaplin
Mary Chaplin is a professional French artist living in Wailly, near Amiens in the beautiful River Selle Valley. She was born near the Bay of the Somme and spent her younger years in the Picardie countryside, often accompanying her father who was passionate about the local wildlife and environment. Her mother had a beautiful garden where she grew flowers to sell at the weekly village markets , Mary would help her picking and creating bunches of flowers, old roses, peonies, lupines , phlox..., it was surely from these early years that her love of the country , forests and flowers came from. Her earliest works then were motivated by her environment, the sea, fields, forests, country life, not forgetting the flowers in her mother’s garden. The Bay of the River Somme is famous for its flora, fauna and above all its beautiful light which has always been an inspiration for painters, poets and writers. At first she experimented with many different techniques, water colour, pastels, pencil, acrylic and oil, capturing the scenes around her, but even at the beginning of her career she was using light as an integral theme through her works. In 2005 her work took on a great U turn when sitting quietly in a small chapel in a picturesque coastal village , Bois de Cise, she watched the light patterns through the stained glass windows moving slowly over the old flag stone floor. She knew she had to try to capture the light, colours and movement and hurried back to her studio these ephemeral images swirling in her head! The resulting abstract works she called her reflections (in French meditations) Series of paintings were created influenced by the light , colour and textures from the chapel, later from the contrasting shadows cast by the pews , alters, architecture and stonework found in churches and cathedrals throughout Europe, all subtly different but all integrating her personal and metaphorical interpretation and appropriation of light’s fugacity. From this abstraction the natural progression was to return to her roots with the incorporation of her love of flowers and nature into her paintings. Fleeting moments captured in the instant, free and energetic brushstrokes, vivid colours, the wind blowing through the flowers , the storm brewing in the distance or the morning sun shining through the mist over her garden give movement, life, joy and ever changing living beauty to her works. Mary takes us into her universe, a unique approach to a subject that is dear to her heart, inventing happy places which she shares with the viewer. In today’s world of metaphorically everlasting winter she brings us an eternal summer. Mary Chaplin has had many plaudits throughout her career. She has exhibited throughout France, Belgium and England in galleries and private exhibitions. Her art has been published in several reviews, specialist art magazines and television broadcasts. Her art is spread all around the world in Private Collections.

"Endless Summer", acrylic, canvas, artist tools, toys, paintbrush, tube, beach
Located in Toronto, Ontario
"Endless Summer" is a well-known artwork among Peter Schenck's many remarkable paintings, and addresses subject matter that continues to engage the artist – the tools of painting and art making, including brushes, tubes of paint and palette knife are arranged in a child-like tableau alongside brightly colored and eroticized inflatables of the hand, the breast, the dollop of paint... And all of it reminiscent of toys on a beach under blue skies where anything should be possible.
From Peter Schenck: "Endless Summer mixes up the time-honored tradition of the still life with my feelings on an artist's attachment to their tools – brush, palette, paint – an attachment at times bordering on erotic, at times feeling awkward and all-thumbs. I was also taking on Tom Wesselmann's concentrated still lives of the 60s and 70s, banal and erotic all at once."
"Endless Summer" is an acrylic paint on canvas measuring 30" tall by 25" wide. It was included in the group show "Sitting Still" at Bravin Lee Programs Gallery, New York City in October 2017, and showed alongside work by Fairfield Porter, Thomas Nozkowski, Janet Fish, Robert DeNiro Sr...

ARTIST STATEMENT
We live in a time of extreme and accelerated change, growing complexity, and specialization. At every stage in our human trajectory from primitive beginnings crawling out of the sea to the present gauntlet of challenges, our thinking tools and their uses are central to the story of what it means to be human. My work is informed by a fascination with thinking tools and the effects of programming and environment through the different phases of life and our capacity for storytelling.
My practice consists of constructing small-scale still life scenarios of toys and other artifacts of human development, then creating photorealistic acrylic paintings of these scenes. The work juxtaposes the familiar and playful with a contemporary, complex, adult world. While I am interested in the science of the mind, and what it means to be a human, my work seldom features the human form, focusing instead on the objects and items that are frequently left behind. As such, the subject of the painting becomes the viewer him or herself because their own humanity is ultimately what is revealed.
My work honors toys as thinking tools for small people and the scenes depicted explore the ways in which the culture of our formative years leaves a lasting mark and continues to shape our storytelling. The plastic artifacts of my formative years carry memories of simultaneous confusion and wonder at the world around me. These are sensations and emotions still very much present in my life. What were your imaginings and dramas when you played with toys? Are you living them today?
The multileveled still life paintings of familiar toys are bright and accessible and connect to the viewer's nostalgia and playfulness while provoking deeper insights into our current evolutionary, cultural, and technological moment. I place each little curio with care into meaningful relationship to their interlocutors and environment. The plastic dinosaurs often depicted are emblematic of childhood curiosities, of great wonder and speculation at past worlds and the depth of evolutionary time, and yet they are made of a material that illustrates our shortsightedness, a quintessential human quality that makes it quite possible that these plastic creations will outlast us all.
I do my best to draw inspiration and resources from everywhere to build a visual language. In my divergent path I find the musical compositions and the story of composer, Philip Glass inspiring. The story of his devotion to his craft and his subsequent successes have encouraged and inspired me. I'm influenced by writers such as Kurt Vonnegut, Robert Sapolsky, and Yuval Noah Harari, the many books by Simon Winchester, Daniel Dennet, Robert Wright...
