About the Item

"Mt. Chocorua, N.H" by Mary Porter Bigelow (American, 1889-1969). Mary was a painter of the New England landscape, which she loved and depicted with quiet, pastoral qualities, she did many scenes of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. She was a student of Charles Curtis Allen, Aldro Hibbard, Marion Sloane, and Anthony Thieme. Signed "Mary Bigelow" lower right. Listed in Women Artists in the White Mountains, 1840-1940. Titled "Mt. Chocorua, N.H" on verso. Oil on artists canvas board. Unframed. 18"H x 24"L. Mary Porter Bigelow was born in Northamton, MA in 1886. She descended from early settlers of Florence, MA. She married George H. Bigelow who was a Boston insurance company executive and lived all her married life in Newton, MA. Bigelow studied with her neighbor and contemporary, Charles Curtis Allan. She also studied for short periods with John Ensor, Aldro Hibbard, Anthony Thieme, and Marion Sloane. She paintied the New England countryside, including New Hampshire, Vermont, the Berkshires, and along the New England coast. With her husband, she went on two week sketching trips where she painted small oil in “plein air” and annotated pencil sketches that she later finished into larger oil paintings in her studio. Her works were exhibited at the Jackson (NH) Historical Society in 1985 and at the Brockton (MA) Art Museum from December 1988 to March 1989. Her White Mountain titles include The Last Farm on Thorn Hill; Mount Washington from Benjamin Pitman Farm, Jackson, NH (1936); Mt. Chocorua, N.H, First Snow on Mount Washington; and Franconia Notch, NH with Cannon Mountain. References Women Artists of the White Mountains

Mid-century Southern landscape of the historical Home possibly of the Artist and built by the Kentucky Governor John Breathitt for his daughter Jane (some historical accounts say) and later the McClean family lived there, in Russellville, Kentucky by Roberta Fisk McClean (American, 1882-1975). As we get the information confirmed we will update the description. Roberta painted numerous versions of the house and one example called it the Bowden House. There is a House that looks similar on E5th in Russellville called Governors Corner, but many look like the same structure of the time. Signed "R.
