This painting builds on Higgins’ Slow Down series, which began in 2021. Through an ongoing exploration of the relationship between text and image, Higgins creates works that communicate directly with the viewer—offering messages that serve as reflections, philosophies, or open-ended prompts intended to foster connection.
Crafted with both acrylic and oil on canvas, the background sky was painted first using broad acrylic brushstrokes. The flower, rendered with a naturalistic touch that avoids overworking, and the text overlay were applied using oil paint. The soft, serene color palette evokes a sense of calm and invitation, encouraging viewers to pause, reflect, and reconnect with their environment amidst the overstimulation of modern life.

Matt Higgins b. 1987 is both an artist and an art professor based in Philadelphia, PA. He engages in a consistent studio practice, with a primary focus on painting across various bodies of work. He received his BFA from West Chester University in 2011 and his MFA from The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2017. As well as maintaining a regular studio practice, he teaches at a few schools in the area including Drexel University, Delaware County Community College and Moore College of Art and Design. His art is included in numerous private collections and has been featured in a diverse range of interior design projects, spanning residential properties, corporations, and hotels. Both his home and studio are located in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia, where he lives with his wife and son.

Matt Higgins is an artist and art professor who lives and works in Philadelphia, Pa. He received his MFA from The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and BFA from West Chester University. His work is included in numerous private and public collections throughout the United States, Europe and Australia. His various bodies of work focus on themes of abstraction, the landscape and text based paintings. His work can be viewed as a constant progression, as well as a cycle from one body of work to the next. He often times returns to existing themes or motifs with a fresh outlook after departing for periods of time. Growth and learning is a significant part of the artists practice and this continued openness and exploration is what keeps his work fresh and original from one body of work to the next, never settling for predictability or the mundane.

A few words of the artist about his art:
When i painting landscapes, I usually choose simple geometric arrangements, contrasts of verticals and levels. I juxtapose the smooth surface of the sky with the rough texture of earth or grass.
I paint symmetrical reflections in water and rhythmic repetitions of trees. Even an ordinary, seemingly uninteresting fragment of the suburban landscape hides a beauty that I want to see and then transfer to the canvas.
I am inspired by nature because it contains a hidden secret of existence. For me, painting it is a reflection on life and passing away. It is an attempt to capture the imperceptible essence, to paint what cannot be seen.
I think that my paintings can be a respite, an antidote for a man tired of technology, constant rush, hustle and bustle of the city.
