This 1963 Impressionist-style landscape is entitled "Yard in Odessa" by Russian artist, Michail Cherni (1933-2000). Part of the Soviet Impressionist movement, Cherni studied at the Kiev Art Institute and was active in Vinnitsa, USSR. From a collection of Soviet Impressionist paintings acquired from a gallery in New Mexico. Impressionism was considered a highly illegal form of resistance by the Soviet government because it did not adhere to the restricted forms of artistic expression; scenes of Soviet dominance and strength or propaganda. It was extremely dangerous for artists to use their material rations for anything but government work, hence the small size of these pieces which are painted on scraps of cardboard or canvas using very little amounts of paint. These petite, idyllic scenes of the Soviet landscape were as revolutionary in their creation as they are beautiful in their content. This piece is framed in an ornate European-style frame with a linen mat using archival framing techniques.
