About the Item

Signed and dated divisionist landscape oil on canvas by Belgian post impressionist painter Modest Huys. This stunning piece is titled "Radiant Autumn - Wakken". It depicts cattle in a river and grazing on its banks. The large tree in the foreground is almost bare and the few leaves remaining on its branches are the most beautiful shades of yellow and orange. The red roofed houses of the village in the distance are glowing in the autumn. Wakken is a village and deelgemeente in Dentergem municipality, in the Belgian province of West Flanders. The village is located near the confluence of the rivers Lys and Mandel. A simply stunning piece by this artist. Signature: Signed lower right and further signed, titled and dated verso Dimensions: Framed: 28"x32" Unframed: 20"x24" Provenance: Private collection - Belgium Modest Huys was a Flemish Impressionist and Luminist painter. He worked in his father’s painting and decorating business from a young age and in 1900 enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp. From 1905, he participated in the exhibitions of Vie et Lumière, a luminist group, mainly painting landscapes. After the First World War, he painted scenes of the devastation at the front. His work was exhibited at the Paris Salon. During this period, his colours became darker and the contrasts harsher, approaching Expressionism. He died in 1932 in Zulte, where he had built his ideal home-studio, the Zonnehuys, in 1926.
