About the Item

Signed lower left "M. Backman" for Muriel Durgin Backman. Titled verso "Union Lumber Co., Fort Bragg- Mendocino, Ca" and painted circa 1955. A moody, mid-century view of the lumber mill in this picturesque Northern California coastal community. A powerful and lyrical work by this notable California Modernist who exhibited with success from the 1930's through the 1950's at the Crocker Art Museum, the Kingsley Art Club, the Berkeley YWCA and the Santa Cruz Art League, among others. Muriel Backman is well-listed and her work is held in the permanent collection of the San Francisco Public Library.
