About the Item

Aura is a semi-abstract oil painting on deep canvas. The warm glow of pale peach clouds are painted against a pale blue sky. The lower section of the painting has been abstracted - leaving out details in order to give the focus on the sky and delicate cloud formations. It was painted in response to the calm and quiet mornings we have here on the coast of Cornwall. My studio looks over a harbour and I see the sunrise every day which inspires a lot of my work. From beautiful warm pink and orange mornings to misty harbour days - these are scenes I see frequently and which very much influence my work. Light and weather play a huge part in my work and watching the intense light of a beautiful sunrise or the soft dusky light of a sunset sky is inspirational. In 2021 I began working from a new studio overlooking Falmouth Harbour which is very exposed to the elements. I see weather conditions as they change - mists closing in over the headland, storms coming across the bay and huge cloud formations floating past - it’s very atmospheric. My process is one of using multiple layers of oil glazes to achieve depth of light and colour, while using the palette knife for added texture and definition. Painting for me is very much a contemplation of a place. I was born in Hong Kong and spent my childhood in the Far East living by the sea which has had a huge influence in my life and work. I moved to Paris in 1990 where I studied at Parsons School of Design. In 1997 I moved to Houston, Texas and studied Fine Art at The Glassell School of Art, the teaching wing of The Museum of Fine Art and exhibited extensively in solo and selected group exhibitions. I moved to Cornwall in 2014 and took on a studio at Krowji in Redruth. I studied at The Newlyn School of Art completing the fourteen week landscaping course and in 2016 I studied at Falmouth Art School’s Summer Intensives. In 2017 I became an Associate Member of Penwith Society of Arts in Cornwall and have exhibited in their selected group exhibitions at Penwith Gallery in St.Ives. My work is in private collections both nationally and internationally.

Lost Between The Details, black and grey oil painting of city skyline
Located in San Diego, CA
"Lost Between The Details" depicts a open skies and city lights. This scene is of no particular place, but rather Carpenter's interpretation and compilation of various places he has visited. As a painter, I examine how the depiction of light contributes to our experience of paintings. The portrayal of light helps a painting to convey the atmosphere and mood of a scene, and is much of what enables a painting to convey depth and realism. Our perception of lighting features occurs largely through pathways in the brain that carry only black and white information, pathways which are distinct from areas that encode the colors and details we use to delineate specific objects. By painting in grayscale, I try to interact specifically with this region of our visual system, with the hope of conveying some of the spaciousness and emotional significance that light can imbue on scenes. Light, whether as the crisp contrast of a back-lit forest or the gray haze of an industrial landscape, is what defines a scene. Its power to communicate the feel of a place is the principle subject of my paintings. The Blue Azul Collection...

One Of The Ways

"One Of The Ways" depicts a densely populated grove. As with other of Carpenter's paintings, this scene invites viewers to look closer and also to go out to explore nature.
