About the Item
‘Morning Calm’ is a semi-abstract oil painting on deep canvas. The warm glow of pale peach clouds are painted against a pale blue sky. The lower section of the painting has been abstracted - leaving out details in order to give the focus on the sky and delicate cloud formations. It was painted in response to the calm and quiet mornings we have here on the coast of Cornwall. My studio looks over a harbour and I see the sunrise every day which inspires a lot of my work. From beautiful warm pink and orange mornings to misty harbour days - these are scenes I see frequently and which very much influence my work.

Artist BIO:
Predominantly a painter of the coast I am constantly drawn to the horizon, where the sea meets sky or where sea meets land, and by the special qualities of light and elemental weather, particularly of the wild and beautiful Cornish coastline where I live. Light and weather play a huge part in my work and watching the intense light of a beautiful sunrise or the soft dusky light of a sunset sky is inspirational. In 2021 I began working from a new studio overlooking Falmouth Harbour which is very exposed to the elements. I see weather conditions as they change - mists closing in over the headland, storms coming across the bay and huge cloud formations floating past - it’s very atmospheric. My process is one of using multiple layers of oil glazes to achieve depth of light and colour, while using the palette knife for added texture and definition. Painting for me is very much a contemplation of a place.
I was born in Hong Kong and spent my childhood in the Far East living by the sea which has had a huge influence in my life and work. I moved to Paris in 1990 where I studied at Parsons School of Design. In 1997 I moved to Houston, Texas and studied Fine Art at The Glassell School of Art, the teaching wing of The Museum of Fine Art and exhibited extensively in solo and selected group exhibitions. I moved to Cornwall in 2014 and took on a studio at Krowji in Redruth. I studied at The Newlyn School of Art completing the fourteen week landscaping course and in 2016 I studied at Falmouth Art School’s Summer Intensives. In 2017 I became an Associate Member of Penwith Society of Arts in Cornwall and have exhibited in their selected group exhibitions at Penwith Gallery in St.Ives. My work is in private collections both nationally and internationally.

A painting completed in the studio after a visit to the Outer Hebrides, the unpredictable weather patterns and light played an important role in creating this piece. The weather on Skye is forever changing and the dramatic and mystical landscapes are what inspires me to try to capture the feeling of energy and atmosphere.
