About the Item
Signed lower right, 'Crotto' for Paul Crotto (French-American, 1922-2016); additionally signed, verso, and dated 1964.
A substantial Post-Impressionist oil showing a view of the River Marne on a sunny day beneath clouded blue skies.
Paul Crotto first studied at the Art Students League in New York, graduating in 1949. He then traveled and studied extensively in Europe, including two years spent in Florence at the Accademia di Belle Arti. Moving to Paris in 1951, he spent two influential years at the Academy of Fernand Léger where his fellow students included Le Corbusier, Sam Francis and Nicolas de Staël. During this early Paris period, Crotto rented Georges Braque’s former atelier at the Hotel Roma (for 9 francs a day). During these leaner, early Paris years, he also worked as an art teacher at the American School. Here he taught art to, among others, the children of Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth. He later attended the Atelier Lacourière in Montmartre where he studied graphic arts, particularly engraving. It was here that he became friendly with Henri Matisse and Joan Miró and, as a result, was invited to exhibit with Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall. As his fortunes improved, Crotto purchased the atelier directly above the Léger Academy. After he married and started a family, he extensively enlarged the atelier to include a second floor with huge studio windows, both for living and painting.
In 1961, Crotto was discovered by the French gallerist Jeanne Castel who invited the artist to exhibit alongside the major contemporary Modernists of the School of Paris From this time on, his work gained wide public and critical acceptance. He continued to exhibit with success at solo and group shows, including at the Salon d'Automne, the Salon de la Jeune Peinture and at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris as well as in Munich, Boston, New York, Los Angeles and Munich. Over a long and distinguished career, Paul Crotto was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards including, in 1963, the Prix International de Villeneuve-sur-Lot.

'Italian Piazza with the Alps Beyond', Paris, Danish Royal Academy, Oslo Museum
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Signed lower right, 'K. L. Hilkier' for Knud Ove Hilkier (Danish, 1884-1953) and painted circa 1950
A lyrical Expressionist oil showing women fetching water from a fountain in the sunny piazza of a northern Italian town, with a view beyond towards the Alps rising in the distance. A powerful and vibrant work by this prominent member of the Bornholm School.
Born in Copenhagen, Knud Hilkier first studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen (1901-7). He was the recipient of numerous prestigious scholarships including the Hielmstierne-Rosencrone (1913); Raben-Levetzau (1914 and 1919); the Ronge Award (1915) and the Akkadian Scholarship (1916) which allowed him to further his studies in Spain and Italy and, most importantly, to make frequent visits to Paris. In Paris, he was influenced by the prevailing Impressionist style which caused his palette to lighten and his brushwork to become looser and more expressive. His subsequent studies with Sigurd Swane...

Pluie a Venice (Venice in the Rain)
By André Hambourg
Located in Costa Mesa, CA
Pluie a Venice is painted in Hambourg's preferred palette of muted blue-green, grey, and gold with splashes of ruby red, deep blue, and emerald green. The soft colors work well for beach scenes and rainy days such as the ones portrayed in this painting. The impressionistic scene shows multiple pedestrians strolling down the boardwalk, shielding themselves from the rain with colorful umbrellas that provide pops of color and balance the overcast sky.
The background contains a three-masted ship and Piazza San Marco's famous bell tower and Basilica. Hambourg uses the minimum number of brushstrokes necessary to portray ships, seagulls, buildings and people as well as reflections on the glistening sidewalk. The brushstrokes in the sky have an interesting texture that is controlled yet carefree and there is heavy impasto throughout. His portrayal is both realistic and romanticized.
Hambourg was clearly influenced by the great Impressionist artists of earlier generations, perhaps none more than the one with a direct connection to his family. Hambourg's wife, Nicole Rachet, was born into a family with a large collection of works by Impressionist master Eugene Boudin. Rachet's grandfather was a contemporary and friend of Boudin's, and a collector of his work. In their later years, Hambourg and Rachet donated over 300 canvases by Boudin and other artists to the Eugene Boudin Museum in Honfleur, France. It was such a large and important gift that the collection bears...
