About the Item

Though born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, artist Ralph Von Lehmden (1908-1970) was the grandson of a German count. He became a noted painter and designer. Lehmden attended the Cleveland School of Art, Northwestern University, Western Reserve University and Grand Central Art School in New York. Initially, he worked as an advertising designer for the Chicago Tribune from 1929 to 1942. He exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1940 to 1956, the National Academy of Design and the Art Director's Guild in New York. He was to live in Chicago for much of his life. This painting, entitled Sunday, depicts the industrial landscape of the American Midwest. The train prepares to go under the overpass as the steam wafts from the industrial plant. This work was awarded the Martin B. Cahn Prize of $100 for a painting by a Chicago artist in 1940. Signed lower right.     Overall good condition. Painting shows fine stable craquelure to the thicker areas of white paint. Points of wear to the lower right corner and the lower left. A few faint scuffs to the upper center.
