Raymond Knaub
Terra Tomah Mountain, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado Landscape Painting

About the Item

This captivating oil painting on linen by Denver-based artist Raymond Knaub (born 1940) is titled "Terra Tomah Mountain – Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado." The large, horizontal landscape artwork showcases a dramatic view of Terra Tomah Mountain, situated in Colorado's renowned Rocky Mountain National Park. The painting captures the majestic 12,718-foot peak, surrounded by the rugged beauty of the park, with swirling snowstorms enhancing the sense of natural wonder. The artwork is presented in a custom frame, with overall dimensions of 39 ¼ x 69 x 2 ⅛ inches, and an image size of 30 ⅛ x 60 inches. About Terra Tomah Mountain Terra Tomah Mountain is a striking 12,718-foot summit nestled in the heart of Rocky Mountain National Park, located in Larimer County, Colorado. This towering peak lies approximately 13 miles west of Estes Park, Colorado, and just 1.5 miles east of the Continental Divide, making it a prominent feature in the stunning landscape of the park. The mountain's intriguing name originates from an incident in 1914 when a member of the Colorado Mountain Club, George Barnard, hiked the summit and, inspired by a nearby lake, chanted a Cahuilla ghost dance song with the phrase "terra toma." This phrase, popular among Pomona College students, led to the club submitting it for consideration as a name for the nearby lake. However, due to a naming error, the term was applied to the mountain instead. Terra Tomah Peak was first mentioned in a 1923 Colorado Mountain Club publication and was officially recognized by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names in 1932. Raymond Knaub’s Terra Tomah Mountain is an exceptional representation of the raw beauty of the Rocky Mountains and a testament to the artist’s skill in capturing Colorado's mountainous landscapes. This breathtaking artwork will be a standout piece in any collection, transporting viewers to one of Colorado's most iconic natural landmarks.
