About the Item

Signed oil on canvas landscape circa 1940 by French post impressionist painter Raymond Thibesart. The piece depicts a lake on a grey misty day. There is a bare tree in the front of the piece which overhangs the water. In the distance the shadow of a tree shrouded in fog reflects in the cold water below. Signature: Signed lower left Dimensions: Framed: 40"x34" Unframed: 32"x26" Provenance: Private French collection Raymond Thibesart studied under Jules Lefebvre at the Académie Julian in Paris and under Tony Robert-Fleury, Henri Martin and Émile Boggio. He presents an emotional vision of the Normandy landscape, working with vibrant colours, luminous highlights and pastel tones. He exhibited in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1897, receiving a silver medal in 1922, at the Salon des Indépendants from 1905 and at the Salon d'Automne. In 2003 his work was featured in the thematic group exhibition Around Impressionism: Nineteen Painters from the School of Normandy ( Autour de l'Impressionnisme: Dix-Neuf Peintres de l'École Normande) at the Maison des Arts, Antony.

From a young age, Modest Huys worked in his father's painting and decorating business and later studied at the "Gentse Nijverheidschool" (Ghent Industrial School). In 1891 or 1892, he came into contact with Emile Claus, who encouraged his artistic inclinations. In 1900, he enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts where his teachers were Eugène Joors and Frans Van Leemputten but he never completed his studies.
