About the Item
A good French Mid Century Expressionist oil on canvas painting by the celebrated French female artist, Renée Bernard (1906-2004), a street scene in Paris, circa 1960.
A very good mid century French Expressionist oil on canvas of a Parisienne Street scene, the painting depicts the wall and buildings of a Paris street with abstract figures. The work has a light impasto style in the manner that the paint is applied, the painting is signed lower right and is also signed & titled to the verso of the canvas. The painting is housed in the original frame and is in excellent condition, and is ready to hang on your wall.
The painting bears a striking resemblance to that of the French artist Bernard Buffet.

Artist Biography
Renée Bernard was born in 1906 in Oytier-Saint-Oblas, France, from 1933 to 1936 she attended the École Normale de Grenoble and continued her studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the Institute of Art and Archaeology.
In Paris, she joined the studio of Lucien Simon, her teacher at the School of Fine Arts She painted, sometimes with gouache, figures, landscapes and wall decorations. She became a drawing teacher in Parisian schools, she left after 18 years to become an inspector of drawing teaching.
She exhibited in several salons in Paris and elsewhere, such as that of the Société des Beaux-Arts de la France d'Outre-Mer, and she was awarded several times: she received four prizes from the Institute and two prizes from the Taylor Foundation (formerly The Association of Artists) one of the most significant institutions in the world of Beaux Arts. In addition, she often received commissions from the French State and the City of Paris.
She painted either in her Parisian workshop or in her workshop in her home town of des Trois Cyprès in Southwestern France.
Thanks to the scholarships received, she traveled to French West Africa, Morocco and the West Indies. Her trip to French West Africa, won in 1940 and was delayed until 1947 due to World War II, led her to visit Senegal, Sudan, Côte d'Ivoire, Haute-Volta, Mauritania and Guinea for eight months.
She created the Renée-Bernard Prize at the Taylor Foundation to promote talented artists, she died in Paris in 2004.
