Painted during Richard Hayley Lever’s early European period, Hyde Park Promenade at Apsley Gate captures a refined, atmospheric view of Edwardian London in the soft light of day. In this intimate oil sketch, Lever’s brushwork is fluid yet precise, suggesting movement and depth in the tree-lined promenade and the gentle bustle of figures along the edge of Hyde Park. Despite its modest scale, the work exudes the freshness and immediacy of direct observation, a hallmark of Lever’s early plein-air technique.
Born in Australia and later establishing himself in both London and the United States, Hayley Lever developed a transatlantic Impressionist style distinguished by vibrant colour, expressive handling, and a sensitive response to place. This work predates his move to New York and reflects the European sensibilities that shaped his mature vision. Lever would go on to become one of America’s most admired early 20th-century painters, exhibiting widely and teaching at the Art Students League of New York.

Richard Hayley Lever
An Australian by birth, Richard Hayley Lever left his native Adelaide at the age of 17 to train as an artist in Europe, and his work soon won attention in London and Paris. In 1900 he was introduced to the St Ives Club by fellow Australian Louis Grier, and he married Aida Gale in the town in the same year. Working closely with Grier and with Julius Olsson he maintained St Ives as a base, while also painting marine subjects along the southern coast of England and in Brittany. In 1912 Hayley Lever move to New York and took American citizenship. His paintings of the Hudson Valley, Vermont, and Nantucket secured an international reputation.

Johann Berthelsen was born in Copenhagen in 1883, the 7th of seven children, to Conrad and Dorothea Karen Berthelsen. His parents were involved in artistic and professional circles. In 1890, his mother brought the children to America, settling in Manistee, Michigan, with her sister's family. They would eventually move to Manitowoc, Wisconsin, a city on the shore of Lake Michigan. As a teenager, Johann was actively involved in choirs and singing groups. And he always loved to draw and paint, and while he was too impatient to take well to schoolwork, and never went beyond the 5th grade.
Although he worked in several trades, Johann's mind and heart were always with the arts. As his voice matured, he also always wanted to be an actor, and at the age of 18 moved to Chicago where he reconnected with an old friend who was studying voice at the Chicago Musical...
