Vibrant plein air painting of California foothills by California artist Rudolf Hess (American, 1903-1986), circa 1940. The artist's color choices and brush work harken to the magical landscapes of German Expressionists Wassily Kandinsky and August Macke. Signed lower right. Verso has preliminary sketch of man giving haircut. Condition: Very good; two tears repaired; normal tonal aging due to age and use. Unframed. Size: 20"H x 26"W.

Born in Valley Ford, CA on Jan. 31, 1903. While a resident of San Francisco in the 1920s, Hess studied at the CSFA. From 1929 until 1968 he worked for the Department of Highways in Sacramento. Hess died in Sacramento, CA on Nov. 9, 1986. His subject matter covers a wide variety and is of the German Expressionist school.

Exhibits include: San Francisco Art Association, 1925-27; Modern Gallery (SF), 1927 (solo); Oakland Art Gallery, 1928; SFMA Inaugural, 1935, 1945; Crocker Art Gallery, 1949, 1951; Calif. State Fair, 1970.
