About

A beautiful work monogrammed with R.L., the work depicts travelers in a mountain landscape. Rudolphus Lauwerier was born on December 22, 1797 - probably in Nijmegen. Roelof, as Rudolphus' call sign was, learned the trade of house painter. In 1825 he married the seamstress Maria Sibilla Bosman. Between 1826 and 1841 Roelof and Maria had eight children, two of whom died young. In the year of his marriage he started his own painting business. From that moment on Roelof was a 'master painter', later also a 'painter of carriages'. He was also a painter and watercolorist. Of his five sons, four followed in their fathers footsteps and continued the painting business. The company celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1925. On 24 June 1868 Maria died and five years later, on 5 June 1883, Roelof died. Lauwerier had not spent the last years of his life uselessly either. Combining work with pleasure, he spent much time practicing painting. He mainly made drawings and watercolors of situations in his immediate surroundings. His last works concern mainly the demolition of the Nijmegen city walls and gates. They give an accurate picture of Nijmegen at the time of dismantling. Many drawings and watercolors by the painter, including a view of the St. Stevenspoort and the Waalwal and a view of the Hezelpoort, have been preserved. The painting was part of a Dutch Art Collection. The frame is handmade by the framemaker Gehring&Heydenrijk. The painting is signed R.L. for Rudolphus Lauwerier. #Nijmegen #Dutch #Lauwerier #Landscape #Mountainscape#Romantic#
