Bottega di Salvator Rosa (Napoli, 1615 – Roma, 1673) La sosta Olio su tela, cm 43 x 34 Con cornice cm 56,5 x 47,5 Il dipinto non è firmato Salvator Rosa fu un prolifico pittore barocco, studiò a Napoli con Fracanzano, Ribera e Falcone, dipingendo soprattutto battaglie, paesaggi e scene di genere (Salvator Rosa, Battaglia, Galleria Palazzo Pitti, Firenze, cm 96 x 146). Nel 1635 si trasferì a Roma, protetto dal cardinale Brancacci, dove conobbe i bamboccianti e l'opera di Peter van Laer e Cerquozzi, come dimostrano alcuni dipinti. Agli anni 1639-1640 risale un mutamento in senso classicista del suo stile, per influsso di Claudde Lorrain, Nicolas Poussin e Pietro Testa, evidente nella concezione del paesaggio, che si concilia comunque con la sensibilità propria dell'artista per la resa degli aspetti pittoreschi della natura (Salvator Rosa, Dipinto, Palazzo Ducale di Sassuolo, cm 143,5 x 176). Il vivace artista fu soprannominato ‘Salvator delle battaglie’ per le numerose rappresentazioni pittoriche di grandiose e sceniche battaglie ma dipinse anche, durante il suo soggiorno fiorentino opere dal tono esoterico e magico come Streghe e incantesimi (1646, National Gallery) e dai temi allegorici e filosofici. La sua fama è legata soprattutto alla rappresentazione di paesaggi, caratterizzati da una natura aspra e selvaggia e alla predilezione per le tonalità scure e i contrasti luministici, come ben si evince da questa tela, opera di un allievo vicino al maestro. Somiglianze sono riscontrabili nella resa della natura, dettagliata e luminosa, come ne Paesaggio con figure (Colnaghi). Le atmosfere cupe e misteriose, scaturite dai colori utilizzati, rappresentano un elemento caratteristico della pittura di Salvator Rosa e della sua bottega. Il napoletano fu molto attivo anche a Firenze e a Roma, dove fu apprezzato anche come incisore. Alcune sue opere andate in asta hanno raggiunto importanti quotazioni, come il Paesaggio boschivo (Finarte, 10.11.2015) e Due pescatori tra paesaggio roccioso (Dorotheum, 25.04.2017)
