About the Item
"Morning Sky" is a beautiful original oil painting, created on linen panel by American artist Sandra Pratt. Depicting snow-capped mountains covered in blue ice looming over the village below, against a deep blue sky.
Born 1978,
Sandra Pratt is an American painter who anchors her artistic vision in landscape, cityscape, and coastal painting. Her impressionist style is infused with boldness, spontaneity, and emotion, her every knife stroke strives to capture reality through the lens of her imagination and personal feelings. It is her unique experiences that enable her to bring seemingly ordinary scenes to life on canvas by employing a plethora of unconventional painting techniques.
My approach to making art is guided by intuition and intense observation of the subject. The act of painting releases a stream of consciousness and creative energy that reveals my view of reality. The tension between visual perception and engaging with the paint itself guides my process. It straddles the line between realism and abstraction. Painting leaves a record of my experience. It is my most poignant and genuine means of expression. My paintings are not intended to convey a specific message, but rather to evoke an emotion from the viewer.

Sandra Pratt
Sandra Pratt (b. 1978) Self-taught American artist Sandra Pratt creates evocative landscape paintings that capture the essence of place through bold, expressive palette knife work. Her distinctive approach transforms humble subjects, weathered barns, mountain vistas, village alleyways, into compositions of remarkable emotional resonance. Working exclusively wet-into-wet in a single session, Pratt's paintings possess an immediacy and authenticity that collectors prize. "I like to see how simple I can make painting in one sitting," says Pratt. "Sometimes I will make five paintings in a day... once you get on a good roll, that sixth painting is going to be the best one." Pratt's refined color palette emphasizes fundamental hues, red, yellow, and blue, occasionally anchored by earth tones or grays. This deliberate limitation creates natural harmony while allowing her to focus on the relationships between shapes, spaces, and edges. Pratt is represented by several prestigious galleries throughout the United States, including Abend Gallery in Denver, CO. She currently lives and works in Boulder, drawing inspiration from the dramatic landscapes of the Rocky Mountains. Her work continues to captivate collectors with its emotional depth and masterful simplicity.

Artist Statement:
My work is inspired by my emotional response to places I've seen and experienced. In particular, the contrasts of light and dark. I enjoy using a palette knife for the immediate bold statement it offers. I started painting as a young child and studied for a while at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago but ultimately decided to be a self-taught artist, My style of painting is called abstract impressionism. I work Alla Prima, wet into wet, not reworking a picture that has dried. I started using the palette knife to do color charts, then kept using it for immediate effects and fun texture. The challenge is making the whole painting cohesive enough in a single session, which can be a fun challenge working big!. I paint intuitively, and I enjoy painting landscapes best, scenes all people can relate to at a fundamental level, green fields in Ireland, Paris alleys, and little white barns.
I'm drawn to old structures, falling down barns, fences, and houses. I love the sense of history, fragility, and secrets they exude. Artists I'm inspired by are Edward Seago, Kyffin Williams, Nicolai Fechin, and Sergei Bogart. These painters have a very particular style and handle of paint manipulation I find fascinating. My color palette has simplified over time. I've experimented with many colors; my basic palette is usually around seven colors plus white. I like creating color harmony, so the focus is on shape, composition, and edges, although colorful paintings have a place in my work. Overall, I intend to show my viewers simplicity in art and create transcendent experiences.
My work has been exhibited at the Brattleboro Museum in Vermont, with the Allied Artists of America in NY, and at the A.R. Mitchell Museum and the Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art in Colorado. I'm from Chicago, IL, and currently live in the mountains of Colorado with my incredible husband, two kids, cattle dog...
