About the Item

The artist Shigeru Wakayama was born in Kumato, Japan in 1954. While he was educated in his native Japan, Wayakama moved to Paris in 1978 and has participated in multiple exhibits and one man shows. His works have received numerous awards of prestige. In "Jardin du Luxembourg", the artist has rendered the Luxembourg Gardens - the second largest public park in Paris. Located in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, the park is best known as the garden of th French Senate, housed in the Luxembourg Palace campus. The history of the gardens is rich indeed. In 1611, the widow of henry IV and the regent for King Louis XIII (known as Marie de Medicis) chose to build a placace much like the Pitti Palace located in her native Florence. After purchasing the hotel du Luxembourg (known today as the Petit-Luxembourg palace), construction was begun and commistioned to Salomon de Brosse (1571-1626). A palace and fountain were created at the onset of construction. Later in 1612, Marie de Medicis reportedly planted 2000 elm trees. At the time, she also directed a group of gardeners in an attempt to recreate a park much remembered as a garden from her childhood. The Medici Fountain was also created and installed. Additional land was purchased in 1630 and the work project was awarded to Jacques Boyceau de la Barauderie (1560-1633) who was the superindendant of the Royal Gardens of the Tuileries and the very early garden of Versailles. Later, the garden was somewhat neglected by French monarchs. In 1780, the future Louis XVIII (the Comte de Provence and brother (1755-1824) of Louis XVI (1754-1793) sold the eastern part of the garden for real estate development. After the French revolution, the leaders of the French Directory expanded the garden to forty hectares by confiscating the neighboring land of the order of the Carthusian monks. To restore the garden, the architect Jean Chalgrin (1739-1811) (also remembered as the architect of the Arc de Triomphe) was chosen and selected to keep and maintain the garden in a formal French style. Currently, statues abound in the garden - beginning in 1870 with the first statue of the Statue of Liberty by Frederic Bartholdi (1834-1904)., A monument to French artist Jean Antoine Watteau was installed in 1896 by sculptor Henri Desire Gauquie (1858-1927). New ornamental gates and fences were added around the park as well as polychrome brick garden houses by Gabriel Davioud (1824-1881). Wakayama's "Jardin du Luxembourg" brings about an instant tranquility in oils - a beautiful pose in Nature, a moment in time. With lush greens and cerulean blue skies, the artist has captured a serene moment in the lively capitol of France.
