About the Item
A beautiful mid 20th century oil on canvas by Belgian artist Suzanne Boland van de Weghe depicting figures in a walled town or city.
The work is very well painted in the naif Paris School style which was prevalent at the time and influenced by painters such as Henri Rousseau. Van de Weghe lived in France for most of her life.
The work comes with it's original purchase receipt from La Chevre d'Or gallery in Cannes. The buyer at that time was Evan Steadman, a well known and eccentric entrepreneur who ran the Grosvenor House Antiques Fair and staged a theatre show about the life of Robert Maxwell.
Signed lower right and presented in it's original frame.

Suzanne Boland van de Weghe was a Belgian painter and children's book author, born in Wandre-lez-Leige on 6 December 1913.
Collaborating with her sister Josette she wrote childen's books, although most were published under the name of Josette Boland van de Weghe.
Suzanne provided illustrations for the books, designed greeting cards and also painted landscapes and figurative works in the naif style, often including well dressed young ladies.
Working in Bruges, the sisters fled during the 1940 exodus to the south of France, where they bought a house in Tourrettes. Suzanne died in 2008.
