About the Item

Across The Rapefield I by Suzane Winn [2020] 'Across the Rapefield I' is an original oil painting by Suzanne Winn. Inspired by the vibrant colours and abundant energy of the spring landscape around my home. The intense yellow of the rapeseed flowers is for me one of the most potent symbols of the season. Spring is my favourite time of the year - I love the energy and colours and the feeling of new life and hope. Framed in a bespoke, hand-painted wooden frame Additional information: Original Oil on board Image Size: H:24 cm x W:30 cm Complete Size of Unframed Work: H:24 cm x W:30 cm x D:0.5cm Frame Size: H:33 cm x W:39 cm x D:3cm Sold Framed Please note that insitu images are purely an indication of how a piece may look ARTIST BIOGRAPHY: Suzanne Winn, artist. I am a landscape artist living in rural Hampshire, England. Central to my work is a desire to tap into the energy I feel when I am within the landscape. This energy for me brings a sense of movement and freedom, and a feeling of connection. Much of my work is based upon landscapes immediately local to my home. I like to revisit the same locations repeatedly, so I really can get to know these places intimately. A core aim for me is to convey something of how it feels to be within these spaces, and my emotional responses to experiencing nature in this way. The first stage in my artistic process is to go out and draw within the landscape, using charcoals and/or pastels. I use charcoals to create tonal studies and pastels to lay down colour. I work rapidly, focusing on key shapes, tones and colours, and trying to capture the energy and feeling of the moment. I aim to go out drawing every week, so that I can stay attuned to the landscape as it changes from season to season, and indeed from day to day and from moment to moment. Back in the studio I paint in oils from my sketches, memory, and from photographs that I have taken whilst out working and walking in the fields. I work with a limited, but very flexible colour palette. I like to work “alla prima”, adopting a wet-on-wet approach, often layering up thick, impasto layers of paint in a single painting session. My aim is to anchor my work in what I have seen and observed, but also to work instinctively and intuitively, focusing on conveying a sense of energy, atmosphere and emotion.

"Copse", oil painting, landscape, abstract, trees, field, sky, light, copper
Located in Toronto, Ontario
"Copse" is an oil painting with chalk and graphite on wood panel, and measures 16" high by 12" wide. It is finished with a clear resin across the surface, lending the artwork a particular warmth and liquidity that is rare and lovely to behold. Typical of the artist, the painting is a mystery despite its apparent simplicity – the landscape with trees on the horizon, the wide full sky bearing down with clouds and light. The picture surface is very interesting – drawn lines and painterly brushstrokes to be sure, but note the speed and swift conviction of those brushstrokes. All of it held, as if in time, by the resin layer acting as a lens to both transmit this picture and admit light to the picture. A true artifact. From Will Hudson...
