About the Item

This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online. In her captivating piece When the Day is Over, Therese James masterfully blends the tranquil beauty of night with the vibrant charm of a bustling village. This original cityscape drawing, rendered in deep canvas acrylics, invites viewers into a whimsical nocturnal landscape illuminated by the soft, silver glow of a full moon. The scene unfolds in a charming village, where colorful apartments, each rendered in hues of pink, yellow, and green, create a lively backdrop against the deep blue of the night sky. The moonlight gently caresses the surfaces of tranquil ponds, setting their waters aglow with shimmering reflections that dance in an array of vibrant colors. At the center of this serene tableau, a figure in a bright red outfit tends to a garden, their presence a splash of warmth in the cool night. Nearby, a faithful dog observes with an air of curiosity, while playful cats and cheerful birds add an extra layer of whimsy to the scene. The artist’s contemporary naïve style imbues the painting with a sense of childlike wonder and joy, capturing a moment of peaceful activity and gentle harmony. The vibrant color scheme of blues, greens, pinks, and yellows not only brings the village to life but also evokes a feeling of coziness and contentment. Each detail—from the reflective water to the small creatures dotting the landscape—adds to the overall enchantment of the work, inviting viewers to lose themselves in its magical, moonlit world. When the Day is Over is signed by Therese James and ready to adorn your space with its unique charm. This enchanting piece is available for viewing and purchase at Signet Contemporary Art in Chelsea, as well as online, where it awaits a place in your collection. Artist Biography: Therese James has been immersed in the world of painting and exhibition since 1993, carving her path as a self-taught artist guided solely by instinct and intuition. Developing a distinctive style characterized by representative characters inhabiting her vibrant canvases, Therese aligns herself with the Naive School, embracing a philosophy of boundless creativity and unfettered expression. For Therese, each painting is a voyage of discovery, an organic evolution of emotions and ideas. Drawing inspiration from the landscapes and literature of her native Wales and the West Country, she imbues her work with a sense of nostalgia and longing, encapsulated by the Welsh concept of ‘Hiraeth’—a profound yearning for home. Selected as ‘Welsh Artist of the Year’ and invited to exhibit at prestigious venues such as ‘The Royal Welsh Show’ and ‘The Eisteddfod’, Therese’s art has garnered recognition both nationally and internationally. Her work can be found in galleries across the UK, as well as in collections spanning America, New Zealand, and Hong Kong. At Signet Contemporary Art Gallery, Therese’s paintings are sourced directly from her studio, ensuring each piece retains its unique authenticity and charm. Embodying the timeless tradition of naive style painting, Therese’s art captivates viewers with its whimsical charm and evocative storytelling. For those drawn to the allure of naive style painting, Therese’s portfolio promises a journey into a world of imagination and wonder. Explore her enchanting creations online or visit Signet Contemporary Art Gallery to experience the magic first-hand. “Over the many years I have worked, my style has slowly and naturally evolved and through continuously working and experimenting it has become an extension of who I am. I work the paint with my hands until I get to the finer details, I get an instinctive feel for when the consistency is just right and then I go with it. I never know how I am going to get there – I only know I have to and that when the journey is complete, I will know. Each one is a roller coaster of emotions, a pilgrimage to places once visited in my mind and heart. The Welsh word ‘Hiraeth’ is what best describes it for me – it is a deep longing for home, that home is inside me, trying to find this place and transform it into something tangible is what continuously fires me to keep painting. It is these places and paintings that make the connections between Therese’s audience and her paintings.” – Therese James
