A tranquil mid-century landscape composition, executed in oil onto board and dated 1946.
The painting captures a serene rural landscape with a country road leading through a cluster of houses nestled among lush trees and rolling fields. The composition guides the viewer’s eye through the pastoral scene, with distant farmsteads adding depth to the background.
The artist has used a loose, expressive style with thick, textured brushstrokes that emphasise movement and atmosphere. The colour palette consists of earthy greens, warm yellows, and muted browns, complemented by pops of red in the rooftops, which provide contrast and visual interest. The brushwork is gestural and expressive, lending the painting a tactile, dynamic quality.
This oil on board is housed in a complementary gilt frame with an inner black window. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has scuffing present.

Abstracted fall landscape by Claire Weist (American, 1930-2014). Bare treetrunks and limbs crisscross the composition, creating a contrast between dark lines and bold color. Warm reds and yellows fill in the spaces between the limbs. Beyond the foliage, a grey sky can be seen.

Claire Weist (American, 1930-2014) was an artist known primarily for her watercolor compositions. She won several awards throughout her career, including the jury award for graphics from the Illinois Watercolor Society. Weist was originally from the Boston area and studied at the Massachusetts College of Art and then Harvard. After spending time teaching art and as an illustrator, Weist moved to Crete, Illinois and opened her own studio, where she spent the remainder of her professional career.
