About the Item

This unsigned late 19th century painting portrays the property used by George Washington as his headquarters during the American Revolution. Known as the Isaac Potts House, it was built in Upper Merion Township, Pennsylvania about ten years before Washington decided to use it during the winter of 1777-78. Now part of and within the Valley Forge National Historic Park, the house has become an icon symbol of George Washington and his thousands of troops forming the Continental Army. This charming oil on canvas was painted ca. 1890-98. It appears to have been done on site and is also painted in winter, just as Washington would have seen it. What is interesting is the surrounding landscape and its relatively new plantings, suggesting that the land had been cleared in recent times to this painting. There is a flagpole shown just to the left of the house and a small cannon shown close by as well. Unfortunately the painting is not signed but it is clear the artists was talented and knew their way around the paintbrush and paintbox. The attention put to details in the house and landscape is quite fine. The oil on canvas measures 16” x20” and comes with its original late 19th century gold decorative frame. There is one old repair patch visible from the backside. It must have been professionally repaired as there is no visibility of that repair to the front. The overall framed dimensions are 20” x 24”. Other than the repair noted, the work is in very good condition for its 130 year age. The frame, too, is in good condition with little or no need of repair in any way. All in all, this is a wonderful example of Americana from the very late 19th century and ready to hang on the wall of your choice. It presents a very crisp and clean image, given the snowy background contrasting with the house and landscape features

American Modernist Town Scene Painting by Pennsylvania artist Joseph M. Plavcan
Located in Baltimore, MD
This colorful late spring scene is most likely around Erie, Pennsylvania. Artist and teacher Joseph M. Plavcan generally painted around the area in which he lived for over 50 years. Joseph Michael Plavcan was born near Pittsburg, in Braddock. He attended the Pennsylvania Academy in 1926, studying with renowned New Hope artist Daniel Garber. Through a scholarship, he went to Europe to study. He returned to Erie in 1932 and became an art instructor, teaching for the next 38 years. Plavcan went far beyond teaching trade school requirements and instilled a true sense of sophisticated artistry in his students. During his artistic career, he exhibited often in Philadelphia, Washington, New York and Chicago. This painting, oil on canvas, demonstrates Plavcan’s style, utilizing figurative abstraction with a modernist color palette. The paint is not over applied and areas are treated with smooth broad brush strokes. The hint of late blooming leaves are dashes of paint applied in a fast yet confident manner. Plavcan’s sense of light, demonstrated in the distant church tower is spot on. While not signed, there are two official estate stamps on the reverse that attest to the authenticity of Plavcan’s work. The piece measures 16” x 20” and appears to be canvas applied to a back board. This was likely done by the former retailer, Hudson House Galleries in Hagerstown, Maryland. That shop was a fine regional art gallery and antiques shop for decades until its closure about five years ago. The painting is nicely framed in a modernist gold wood frame with a subtle pink liner. The overall framed dimensions are about 20” x 24”. The painting is in very good condition, bright and crisp. There is a very minor vertical crease above the peak of the house that is truly barely noticeable from any distance. Other than that, all is fine with the work and its frame. This strong, colorful work by Joseph Plavcan...

Historical Southern Painting - North Carolina Homestead - Belcross, Camden Co.
Located in Baltimore, MD
If you have interest in Eastern North Carolina Tidewater history and architecture, this painting may be a fine addition to your home or collection. It is an oil on board of the Sanderlin House in Belcross, Camden County. There is quite a bit of history written on a card on the back board that describes the family members of the house in the late 19th century. Camden is the courthouse town for Camden County. It is a small town located on the east side of the Pasquotank River, a few miles from Elizabeth City. Belcross is an area just outside of town. Apparently two near-identical houses were built ca 1840’s by the Sanderlin brothers, William and Joseph. One was left to ruin and disappeared, the other seems to possibly remain. In any event, per the information included, this is a view of the house by artist Miss Ella Bidgood, ca 1895. An Ella Bidgood, born in Baltimore in 1855, has been identified and she was a resident of Norfolk, Virginia with her family in the 1900 census. She is likely the artist of this painting. It is painted in a somewhat naive style but competently shows details of the house in nice, vivid colors. The painting is not signed but the information on the back side seems completely reliable. The painting itself is oil on board and measures 12” x 18”. It has been recently cleaned and varnished. It is in very good condition with no issues to report. It is housed in a substantial gold painted frame of the period with interesting detailing. Overall framed measurements are 19” x 24”. The frame is in good solid condition with no issues to report, other than expected very minor age-related wear. Note that the photos show some glare from the varnish in places that really doesn’t show in general light. Southern paintings...
