About the Item

Vernon Beauvoir Ward (1905–1985) was a British painter and commercial artist renowned for his evocative depictions of Edwardian life, wildlife, and landscapes. Born in Hampstead, London, he was the son of an art dealer, which provided him early exposure to art and the opportunity to study various painting styles. At just 14, he enrolled at the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art in London, where he trained under notable artists such as Henry Tonks, Wilson Steer, and Sir Walter Russell. After his father's death, Ward faced financial challenges and turned to commercial art to support himself and his mother. He worked with publishers like Frost & Reed, W.N. Sharpe, and The Medici Society, producing artworks that were reproduced on items such as jigsaw puzzles, greeting cards, and prints. Despite his commercial success, Ward continued to create personal artworks, often under the pseudonym Bertram Linder. Ward's artistic style is characterized by a keen attention to detail, a deep appreciation for nature, and a nostalgic portrayal of Edwardian life. His works often feature birds, flowers, and rural landscapes, capturing the tranquillity and beauty of the British countryside. In 1976, he held his first solo exhibition at King Street Galleries, marking a significant milestone in his artistic career. "The Isle of Arran, Sannox: Snipes in Flight" This painting captures a serene moment in the Scottish Highlands, showcasing Ward's mastery in depicting wildlife and natural landscapes. The painting portrays a group of snipes—small, agile wading birds—taking flight over the rugged terrain and river of Sannox on the Isle of Arran. The birds are rendered with remarkable precision, their elongated bills and distinctive plumage captured in mid-flight. The background features the rolling hills and craggy peaks of Arran, bathed in the soft light of a bright blue sky. The bright blue sky and the dynamic movement of the snipes evoke a sense of freedom and the untamed beauty of the Scottish landscape. Ward's attention to detail and his ability to convey the essence of the natural world make this painting a testament to his skill and artistic vision with an impressionist brushstroke. canvas size: 46.5 x 51.5 cm Painting and frame conservation services are provided upon request.
