About the Item

This bright summer beach painting holds a surprise if you look closely. What seems like a young couple just spending a day at the shore together, actually tells a story. The young woman is looking intently at a ring. Surely the young man with her has given her the ring as an engagement promise. Both the two figures and their landscape setting are well rendered and complementary. Their clothing is nicely detailed. There is a very good sense of light in the painting, typical of the summer day. The sailboat in the right background and the sand grasses are added touches to the scene. The painting is definitely of the Boston School and attributed to maritime and landscape painter William Edward Norton. Born in Boston in 1843, Norton studied with George Inness and then made his way to Europe. He was drawn to the Brittany area of coastal France as well as the Dutch coast. He settled in London during the last part of the 19th century. Norton and his wife returned to the United States in 1901, settling in New York. He exhibited often at the Boston Art Club between 1873 and 1909. He also exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy, the Royal Academy in London and the Paris Salon. The subject matter of this painting is similar to several paintings that Norton did of people on the beach in Holland. The color palette is very similar to Norton’s as is the composition and painting style. The one difference might be the detailing of the faces, which may indicate that it was either a well developed sketch or not quite a fully complete work - hence no signature. The painting is oil on canvas and measures 18” x 22”. Judging from the back of the painting and stretcher construction, it dates to the very end of the 19th century or possibly the very first years of the 20th. . It is in very nice condition with a professional repair, recent cleaning and fresh varnish coat. It is housed in a beautifully detailed late 19th century gilt frame that compliments the painting very well. It is a work of art in itself. The frame measures 25 1/2” x 28 1/2” overall and is also in very good condition with only very minor age issues here and there. While it may be difficult to ascertain that this is in fact a William Edward Norton painting, it is certainly of the circle or manner of Norton. The subject matter is timeless and for a painting about 125 years old, a very bright and joyful scene to hang on the wall or location of choice.
