William Miller Frazer
A Summer's Day, impressionist, early 20th century, oil on canvas

early 20th century

About the Item

A Summer’s Day by William Miller Frazer (1864-1961) depicts a tranquil countryside scene of sheep grazing and resting. Frazer’s sheep find numerous ways to enjoy the pleasantries of a prospering field. Several luscious, green trees occupy the painting’s middle ground. Behind the trees’ feathering limbs, viewers find an expansive blue sky that seems to lead to an endless horizon. The painting, an oil on canvas measuring 15.25 x 19.25 inches unframed (21.5 x 25.25 inches framed), offers a lovely presentation of Frazer’s impressionist style and his fascination with landscapes. Though Frazer’s landscapes mostly depict scenes from the Northern British Isles, each work reflects his desire to capture the scene’s surrounding nature, time of day, atmospheric effects, and season. This painting is situated within its original, gold gilt frame, and is signed in the lower left corner. Frazer was born at Scone, Perthshire and studied at Perth Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy Schools. Within his lifetime, Frazer achieved notoriety and was one of the best-loved and respected artists. In 1908 Frazer was elected President of the Society of Scottish Artists, and later served as Treasurer for the Royal Scottish Academy from 1932-1937. His works have been featured throughout Scotland in various galleries and museums, including the Fine Art Society in Edinburgh, The Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, and the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour.
