About the Item

A very beautiful 1930's impressionist oil on board depicting the beach at Locmariaquer in Brittany, France by the important Dutch painter Willem van Hasselt. The work has exceptional provenance having been sold through the prestigious Wildenstein Gallery, London, from whom it was purchased by the actor Sir John Mills. The painting is signed lower right and presented in a swept gilt frame. Artist: Willem van Hasselt (Dutch, 1882-1963) Title: Locmariaquer Medium: Oil on board Size: 13.5 x 15 inches (34 x 38 cm) including the frame Provenance: Wildenstein & Co. Ltd, London, from whom purchased by Sir John Mills (1908-2005) Artist biography: Willem van Hasselt settled in France and exhibited regularly in Paris at the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, of which he was a committee member. In 1933, he was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur, and was elected as a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1945. His varied themes, which are traditional in nature, and his skilful drawing and use of colour make him typical of the artists in the Paris School between the two world wars.
