About the Item

Victorian Marine 19th Century Oil Painting on Canvas on stretchers, with Shipping off the Coast in a stiff breeze and stormy seas. Another fabulous maritime painting from William Webb who was one of the foremost marine painters of his time. He was rediscovered in the 20th Century by Denys Brook Hart who had a maritime gallery in Lymington England and who wrote the bible of 19th Century Marine Paintings, this painting was from his collection back then, giving it excellent provenance. William Webb lived and worked all his life in Manchester, though he travelled round the country for coastal views, being particularly fond of the Isle of Man. He first exhibited in Manchester in 1889, and showed some fifty seven works there until his death. He also showed at the Royal Academy. He was elected an associate member of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts in 1899 but committed suicide in November 1903..

Victorian Marine Seascape Large Oil Painting of Pure Seas and Shimmering Light
Located in ludlow, GB
Victorian Marine Seascape Large Oil Painting of Pure Seas and Shimmering Light by the absolute Master of Pure Seas Paintings. This is a beautiful, ethereal work by Henry Moore (THE Henry Moore and not the famous Sculptor!). The seascape we have for sale is an exquisite example of Moore’s sea-painting (he began painting the sea in the late 1860s), this, produced at the height of his fame and talents, it was painted in 1891. In it he captures the rolling waves as they catch the light and conveys a cool beauty within this deceptively simple composition. There may be a hint of a vessel in the background but maybe it is a trick of the light!! The seagulls dance in the foreground. Moore manages to straddle two enormous art...

19th century English marine seascape, with fishing boats in the North Sea
Located in Woodbury, CT
William Thornley was a painter of coastal scenes whose work is very similar to Hubert and Charles Thornley, who may have been members of the same family. He painted scenes of genre, architecture, and landscapes as well. A number of the landscapes were of Belgium, Holland, Italy, and Norway. However, it is for his seascapes that he is best remembered. Thornley’s works are beautifully detailed and show a masterful understanding of the moods of both weather and sea. They are often small in size and put together with fine detail and great artistic merit. Thornley’s fishing scenes are spirited and similar in style to those of “Jock” Wilson, and are often painted in pairs. Thornley’s works have always been popular when they appear on the art market. He was believed to have first exhibited marines at the Royal Academy in 1859 from an address in Paddington, London and also at the British Institution from 1861 until it closed in 1867. He continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy until 1898. Thornley also exhibited at the Paris Salon and the Salon of French Artists, receiving an honorable mention in 1881 and a third-place medal in 1888. William Thornley also went by the names Georges William and William...
