About the Item
'Mont Sainte-Victoire', oil on canvas, by Yves Brayer (circa 1960s). For Cezanne (1839-1906), his famous works depicting Sainte-Victoire Mountain were an ongoing study and a constant reflection on how landscape could be described. In his later representations, the mountain is only recognisable by the outline rising on the horizon, but everything around it becomes indefinite and abstract. By contrast, Brayer's rendition of the revered Mont Sainte-Victoire is rustically charming, down-to-earth and beautiful in its simplicity. The colours and composition of this work result in an alluring image, an original version true to Brayer's aesthetic. The piece is in very good condition and has been newly framed with a French-style linen slip. The artist signed the work in the lower right hand. About the Artist: Yves Brayer (1907-1990) was born in Versailles, France. Determined to be an artist from an early age, he set out for Paris in 1924, initially studying at the academies in Montparnasse, and from there he attended the École des Beaux-Arts. Whilst still a student he exhibited at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Indépendants, and in 1927 Brayer left Paris for Spain with the aid of a state grant to enable him to study the works of the Spanish Masters in the Prado.
On his return to Paris in 1934 he exhibited a collection of paintings inspired by his travels in Europe and Morocco to great acclaim. Having moved south to Cordes in the Tarn region of France after the War, Brayer then discovered the area which was to have the greatest artistic influence on his work: Provence. He was enchanted by the diverse and architectural forms of the Alpilles mountains, and by the vast expanse of the Camargue region with its ubiquitous white horses and black bulls. From then on he spent several months each year working in Provence. He also made several trips to Mexico, Egypt, Iran, Greece, Russia, Turkey, USA and Japan where he was quick to grasp the unique rhythm and light of each country.
A large collection of Yves Brayer’s paintings are on permanent display both at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Cordes, in the Salle Yves Brayer and at the Musée Yves Brayer in Les Baux de Provence, as well as various museums in other parts of France and elsewhere. Yves Brayer died in 1990.

Yves Brayer
Yves Brayer stands among the most celebrated modern French painters. Although Brayer was faithful to the figurative tradition, his ample métier was enriched by his vision. Brayer’s oeuvre proved to be very diverse, for besides his well-known landscapes, he also painted vast canvases, portraits and still lifes. A lover of Mediterranean landscapes, Brayer sojourned in Morocco, Spain and Italy before settling down in Provence. There, Brayer was enchanted by the diverse and architectural forms of the Alpilles mountains and by the vast expanse of the Camargue region with its ubiquitous white horses and black bulls. From then on, Brayer spent several months each year working in Provence. Brayer also traveled internationally, where he was quick to grasp the unique rhythm and light of each country. When Brayer was in Paris in 1942, Jacques Rouché appointed Brayer costume-and-set designer for a ballet at the Opera de Paris. Brayer passed away in Paris in 1990. A large collection of his paintings are on permanent display both at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Cordes, France and at the Musée Yves Brayer in Les Baux de Provence, as well as many regional museums in his home country. In the United States, Brayer's works form part of the collection of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, among others.

The light I observed everywhere was of a special quality, fluorescent blue, shone from nowhere but radiated from every point, oddly with great depth and intensity. The light in an entirely different dimension came from nowhere and went nowhere shimmering with the glow of a bright blue jewel. The most important thing I discovered was of being omnipresent and able to understand everything at the same time, yes I could fathom creation completely.
Auke Sonnega, born March 9, 1910 in Leeuwarden, known as the painter, primarily of young Balinese men and women.
Originally raised in the reformed denomination, the parents of Auke apparently practised theosophy and their children, including Auke were taught these principles. The talent for drawing revealed itself at an early stage which in 1926 lead to a 4-year study of textile design at the Academy for Art and Craft in Amsterdam.
He completed the academy in 1930 and worked in a carpet factory in Twente until 1934 and then followed in his sister Aafje’s footsteps leaving the Netherlands to go to the Dutch East Indies where in 1935 he started working as a graphic designer with an advertising bureau in Batavia. He was able to travel through Java and Bali on the motorbike that he brought with him from Europe, and was paid for his travelogue, enhanced with his own photo’s which appeared in several Dutch newspapers and magazines.
