Provenance: Estate of the Artist
About the Artist: Zola Zaugg was born and raised in Missouri and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Hardin College Conservatory. Her early interest in art led her to study with William Hakking of Syracuse University. In 1916, Zola married Frederick C. Zaugg, and the couple settled in Colorado Springs, where they raised their two children.
In the 1940s, after her children had grown, Zola became involved with the Colorado Springs Art Guild and emerged as an influential figure in the local art community. Her first exhibition was at the La Hacienda room at the Antlers Hotel, where she quickly gained recognition for her talent. She later had a one-person show at the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center, where she shared her artistic philosophy, emphasizing the importance of an artist expressing their inner being. Zaugg was particularly inspired by the works of Charles Ragland Bunnell, who influenced her shift toward a more abstract approach to painting while still maintaining a connection to recognizable forms.
Throughout her career, Zola became known for her striking portraits and landscapes, often depicting Colorado landmarks. Her work has been exhibited in galleries beyond Colorado Springs, including in Denver and her hometown of Mexico, Missouri. Zaugg was also a dedicated teacher, offering lessons in free-hand drawing, sketching, and oil painting.
Known for her contributions to Colorado’s vibrant art scene, Zola Zaugg remains a respected figure in the state's artistic heritage.
