This painting is related to two other works by Goodall. There is an 1885-1886, 56" x 32.25", black and white chalk drawing on buff paper, entitled "Study for Susannah in Her Bath". This is within the permanent collection of the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum, Bournemouth, UK, (gift from Sir Merton Russell-Cotes, 1921). The second work is an 1886, 14.5" x 10.5", oil painting on canvas of the same image with the same title which was sold by Sotheby's, Belgravia, Lot 37, on March 20th, 1979 into a private collection, (Paul Mellon Centre Photographic Archive, London, UK - Object No. PA-F03299-0031). Our example here, the first original painting of "Susannah (Without the Elders)" from 1885 was exhibited in 1886 at the Royal Academy, London, UK and subsequently purchased by Mr. Knox d'Arcy of Stanmore Hall, (Official Goodall Family of Artist's Website) and ("The Reminiscences of Frederick Goodall, R. A.," 1902 - page 387).
Frost & Reed is one of the UK’s oldest dealerships having been established by William Hill in Bristol in 1808. Over fifty years later in 1859 the business was sold to John Frost who listed his activities as a 'Carver, Gilder, Print Seller, Wholesale and Retail Artists Colourman and Drawing Paper Depot.' Frost was obviously well regarded as he was the holder of Queen Victoria’s Royal Warrant as Carver & Guilder to Her Majesty. After Frost’s demise in 1875 his position was taken by his nephew Walter Frost and his new partner William Reed and in 1881 the name of Frost & Reed formally came into being. The company originally dealt in prints, mezzotints, etching and engravings and in 1908 they decided to broaden their horizons by opening in the capital. They initially opened in St. James’ and have, despite several moves through expansion and enemy bomb damage during World War II, remained in London’s West End. By the millennium they were based next door to world renowned auctioneers Christies. Since 1884 the company has traded in the USA and Canada through art fairs and exhibitions and in 2002 an elegant showroom was opened in New York’s Madison Avenue. In 2006 following a major revamping of the London showroom Frost & Reed Contemporary was opened within the existing London building. As its title suggests it handles work by 21st century artists. Over its 200 years of existence the variety of works sold by the Gallery has encompassed 18th century Masters like Constable and Gainsborough, through to Alfred Munnings and 20th century greats such as Picasso and Gustav Klimt.
Biography:
Frederick Goodall was born in London in 1822, the second son of steel line engraver Edward Goodall (1795–1870). He received his education at the Wellington Road Academy. Goodall's first commission, for Isambard Brunel, was six watercolour paintings of the Thames Tunnel. Four of these were exhibited at the Royal Academy when Frederick was 16. His first oil won a Society of Arts silver medal. He exhibited work at the Royal Academy 27 times between 1838 and 1859. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy (ARA) in 1852 and a full Royal Academician (RA) in 1863.
Goodall visited Egypt twice; in 1858 and again in 1870, both times travelling and camping with Bedouin tribesmen. On his first visit to Egypt, he shared a house and studio with artist, Carl Haag and the pair often sketched together, both in the streets and outside Cairo, especially in the area around the Pyramids. On his second visit in 1870, he lived at Saqqara, near the Pyramids with the aim of directly observing Bedouin lifestyles. After his return to England, Goodall painted many variations of the same Eastern themes. In order to provide authentic detail to his paintings, Goodall brought back sheep and goats from Egypt. The Egyptian theme was prominent in his work, with 170 paintings being exhibited at the Royal Academy over 46 years. Goodall's work received high praise and acclaim from critics and artists alike and he earned a fortune from his paintings. He had a home built, Grims Dyke, Harrow Weald, (1870-2), designed by Norman Shaw, where he would entertain guests such as the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII).
Goodall married Anne Thomson (26 Dec 1822 - 11 Aug 1869), daughter of the engraver James Thomson, in 1846. Among their five children were artists Frederick Trevelyan and Howard Goodall. Frederick Trevelyan was the more successful in a very short career, dying following a pistol accident at the age of 24. Following the death of Anne, who is buried in Highgate Cemetery in 1869, Goodall married artist Alice May Tarry in 1872. they had two children. Frederick Goodall's brother, Edward Angelo Goodall (1819–1908) was also a highly gifted artist who exhibited at the RA from 1846 to 1853. A specialist in watercolours, he was invited to join the Royal Watercolour Society in 1856 and exhibited 328 pictures at its exhibitions. It was Edward who had the distressing task of arranging the sale of his brother's pictures and effects when he was declared bankrupt in 1902. His other brother Walter Goodall, and sister Eliza Goodall, were also artists. Although hugely wealthy at the height of his career, his income dwindled during his final years and when he died in 1904 he was bankrupt. He was buried in a family vault on the western side of Highgate Cemetery.

Biography:
Henri Fantin-Latour, in full Ignace-Henri-Jean-Théodore Fantin-Latour (born Jan. 14, 1836, Grenoble, France—died Aug. 25, 1904, Buré), French painter, printmaker, and illustrator noted for his still lifes with flowers and his portraits, especially group compositions, of contemporary French celebrities in the arts.
Fantin-Latour’s first teacher was his father, a well-known portrait painter. Later, he studied at the school of Lecoq de Boisbaudran and attended the École des Beaux-Arts. He exhibited at the official French Salons, but in 1863 he also showed his work in the rebel Salon des Refusés.
Although academic in manner, Fantin-Latour was independent in style. He had numerous friends among the leading French painters of his day, including J.-A.-D. Ingres, Eugène Delacroix, Camille Corot, Édouard Manet, and Gustave Courbet. His portrait groups, often arranged in rows of heads and figures like 17th-century Dutch guild...

Though he shared his mother's love of art, Hopkins initially entered Ohio State University in 1896 to study electrical engineering. However, he soon left and briefly enrolled in the Columbus School of Art before going to the Art Academy of Cincinnati where he studied with Frank Duveneck. In 1900, Hopkins moved to New York City and worked as a medical textbook illustrator. Two years later he made the pilgrimage to the art center of the western world at the time, Paris, France.
While in Paris he improved his craft at the Académie Colarossi. Hopkins embraced Parisian life and socialized with and visited the studios of such great artists as Pierre...
