About the Item

Cubist Nude Woman by the Window in Oil on Canvas-Wrapped Illustration Panel Lovely modernist depiction of a nude woman, facing away from the viewer, by Kero Antoyan (Armenian, 1912-1993). A woman is shown in a seated position, with her legs off to one side. She is on a sofa or bed, facing away from the viewer towards a window with curtains. This piece is executed in a modernist cubist style, adding bright patches of color throughout the piece. Signed "Antoyan" in the lower right corner. Presented in a light gold colored frame with a black liner. Frame size: 25.75"H x 29.75"W Image size: 19.5"H x 23.5"W Kero Antoyan – Born in Armenia in 1914, began his artistic apprenticeship as an assistant to a mural painter. Following this, he copied Old Master paintings for religious institutions. Antoyan came to New York City in 1934 and became a student at the Art Student’s League where he studied with Arnold Blanche and Zygmund Menkes. During World War II, Antoyan served as an instructor with the Signal Corps in Southern California, and following his release from the army, enrolled at Chouinard’s Art Institute in Los Angeles. During his four years of study there, he studied with the three men who have had the greatest influence on his artistic direction: Don Graham, William Moore and Richard Haines. Upon completion of his work at Chouinard’s, Antoyan became an instructor of drawing at the same institution. In 1955 Antoyan was well received in his one-man show at the Palos Verdes Gallery in Palos Verdes. The following year Alexander Cowie offered him a one-man show at his Biltmore Hotel Gallery in Los Angeles; the show was highly successful and praised by the Los Angeles Times Art Critic, Arthur Millier. Among the many other achievements and awards won by Antoyan are the Los Angeles County Museum Award and 2nd prize in the New York City Artist’s Show in 1957. He won 1st Prize in Oil in the 1959 California State Fair and many awards at the Laguna Beach Art Gallery. In 1962-63 Antoyan spent a year in Europe to paint and study under a grant from the A.G.B.Y. President Fund, during which time he studied at the Accademia de Belle Arti in Rome as well as traveling and painting in the Middle East. Upon his return, he took up his teaching again. He has had numerous one-man shows at the Comara Gallery, Cowie Gallery, Silvan Simone Gallery and the Scott Darazian Gallery in New York. His participation in groups has been extensive, and prizes have been awarded Antoyan recently both at Barnsdall Park and at the 1964 All California Exhibit where he won 1st Prize in watercolor. Mr. Antoyan’s work has appeared in a number of publications, the most significant of which are American Artist, October 1959, and the book, ‘Realm of Contemporary Still Life Painting’ by Bentley Schaad, 1961.
