About the Item

This is a wonderful example of Louis Bouché's charming Nude portraits. The artist was truly a master of capturing the energy of the times, and character of his subjects effortlessly. A striking piece, with expressed lust and beauty. The mysterious woman with black hair and red lips poses seated on a chair with clothes. Comes housed in a beautiful ornate gold-tone wood frame with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 20 x 14 inches Frame measures 24 x 19 inches Louis George Bouché was born in New York City on March 18, 1896, and was an American artist, muralist, and decorator. He grew up in Paris and studied at the Lysée Calneux, Académie Colarossi, and the Grande Chaumiere. After coming back to New York he studied at the Art Students League of New York in 1915, with Dimitri Romanovsky and Frank Vincent DuMond. In 1921 he married Marian. From 1922 to 1926 Bouché curated an art gallery in Wanamaker's department store, and he was also very active painting murals. He painted murals for the Pennsylvania Railroad, and Radio City Music Hall, and was also commissioned to paint murals at the Eisenhower Presidential Museum, Stewart Lee Udall Department of the Interior Building, Robert F. Kennedy Department of Justice Building and the Ellenville, New York post office. In 1933 he became a Guggenheim Fellow and later in his career Bouché taught at the Art Students League in New York, University of Cincinnati, and Drake University. His art is held by the U.S. State Department, the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and The Phillips Collection. And his papers are now held by the Archives of American Art. Louis Bouché died on August 7, 1969, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
