Born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1921, artist Norman Rubington studied at the Yale School of Fine Arts and Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris where he participated in a number of group exhibitions and his first solo show at the Salon d'Automne in 1948, which received high acclaim. Following his studies, he returned to the States and exhibited in a series of shows in Boston, New York and San Francisco.
Rubington was awarded a grant from the Tiffany Foundation, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Prix de Rome prize and was a fellow of the McDowell Art Colony in New Hampshire. Rubington exhibited at the Salon d'Automne, Paris, City Center, New York, Carl Siembab Gallery, Boston, Berman Museum of Art, Pennsylvania, American Academy, Rome, Museum of Fine Arts, San Francisco, Corcoran Gallery, Washington D.C., Art Institute of Chicago, American Art Gallery, Copenhagen, Rome Art Club, and Museo Berera, Milan.

A magnificent abstract nude rendered in a dynamic colour palette. This is probably Hughes-Stanton's most important work, and belongs to the nation's great, if brief, period of British Surrealism. The three major elements are distinct: the pastel tones of the window view and wall, the sensual curvatures of the pale nude, and the bold foreground featuring a fantastically accomplished still life of a fruit bowl (which could be a painting in and of itself) and the impressively phallic chair back. This is a brilliant example of erotic modernist abstraction.
Blair Hughes-Stanton, son of the artist Sir Herbert Hughes-Stanton, was a noted British artist of the interwar period. At the age of 13 he joined the Royal Navy training ship HMS Coway, but at 19 - advised by his father - he abandoned the sea for his paintbox. He studied art at Byam Shaw School (1919-1922) where he was influenced by Leon Underwood (who was a major influence throughout his studying), Royal Academy Schools (1922-23), and Leon Underwood's School (1923-25). He was celebrated mostly for his skills as an engraver, and was a founding member of the English Wood Engraving Society when it was established in 1925. Phillip received a BFA degree in painting from the Kansas City Art Institute, Kansas City, Missouri in 1972. Studied two years under painting department chairman, Wilbur Niewald. While attending school in Kansas City he became intrigued with the impressionist school of painting and their use of nature as a source of information for their work. Using the infinite variations of nature in the still life, figure and landscape, the artist is presented with limitless subject matter. Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro and other painters of nature were earlier influences on Phillip's work. Dealing with ever-changing elements of nature, movement of light and shadow in the landscape, field workers finishing their tasks, Phillip adopted a broken color style of applying paint to his canvas. This approach allowed the image on the canvas to be developed quickly, and all at one time.
Phillip has lived and painted in the Northwest since 1989. His long desire to paint the subject matter of the impressionists painters and his belief that beautiful subject matter increases the probability of painting beautiful paintings, inspired two painting trips to Mexico and ten trips to Europe. In April of 2007, April of 2008 and again in 2014, a rented boat on the Canal du Midi, France served as a form of transportation, a floating studio and hotel.
