The individuals in Stephen Wright’s work confront us visually and psychologically. His paintings tend to transfix. Standing before them, one is drawn in by the intent gaze of a woman, the slumped figure of a nude man, or the averted face of someone lost in reverie. Wright paints mainly solo subjects.
