About the Item

Nathan Brad Hall's work comes together in this show to build an undeniably jaw dropping experience for viewers. “Undercurrents,” says Hall, “is about trying to find a way to capture the underlying layers of emotion and have that emotion resonate outwards. It’s the hum of electricity just below the surface, pulsing and cracking, that influences the way we move about in the world.” Based in New York and known for his large-scale figure paintings, Hall’s work offers glimpses into the intensity and vulnerability of being human. He says, "working at a sizable scale allows the viewer to become enveloped in the figure's deep humanity." Hall's monumentally scaled work is defined by his use of dramatic lighting. In each work, he illuminates specific areas of the figure and their surroundings as the rest fades away into deep shadows. While Hall's work displays his knowledge and technique with painting realism, bits and pieces of texture pop out throughout the body of work. Highlights of selectively placed thickly painted marks bring his work to a whole new level of depth. The selective marks reward viewers as they view the work up close, until they fade into the image from afar. Hall states, "Using both expressive and refined brush strokes of various thickness, my work uses the physical nature of oil paint to explore the balance of energy and stillness that can make the human figure come alive." Nathan Brad Hall lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. With a background in both abstract and figurative studies, his focus today is on figurative oil painting, attempting to capture the light that illuminates us all. He has shown his work extensively in group and solo exhibitions in NYC and beyond and can be found in private collections across the U.S. and internationally. Peonies in White Light - Oil Painting with 12K White Gold Leaf, Blond Female
By Michael Van Zeyl
Located in Chicago, IL
The blond figure, along with the floating peonies, combine to explore the dynamic between the eternal and the temporal, as well as our own relationship with nature. The gold leaf adds a three-dimensional softness as well as a glow upon which the female figure floats. Her skin is seductively painted; her teal dress falls off her shoulder; white peonies float by; the scene is set for a dreamy visual feast. The painting is framed in a gilt frame. Chiaroscuro
By Christopher Ganz
Located in Chicago, IL
-ARTIST STATEMENT- I depict my person in multiplicity with different selves representing dramatis personae. My likeness is both implicit and symbolic in the portrayal of my narrative; the drama involved in creating art and the artist’s role in society. I use realism to invite the viewer into mysterious inner worlds that are layered reflections of the outer. Dehumanizing environments are imbued with art historical references as a critique of power structures. The artist is an Everyman who is at odds with society and his self. Visually my work is a celebration of society’s dark undercurrents and its overlooked absurdities. I use charcoal and printmaking media as their tenebrous values add a fitting metaphor. The nuances of light and shadow seduce viewers into a world their better judgment would have them avoid. This provokes a sense of disquietude that causes viewers to assess our world through the austerity of a colorless, yet not humorless, light. -BIO- Christopher Ganz grew up in Northeast Ohio and from early on had a fertile imagination and an interest in art. Christopher's artistic education truly began at the University of Missouri, where his love of the human form led to many figure drawing classes and his exposure to the wonders of printmaking. Christopher's then went onto graduate school at Indiana University and a summer abroad program in Italy was a dream realized. Christopher then grasped charcoal with a renewed vigor and large, sfumato-laden drawings ensued. Christopher's artistic influences are many; from a seminal exposure to Dore's engravings of the Divine Comedy, to Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Goya, and up to Lucian Freud, Mark Tansey...

CATHERINE 6 - Contemporary Realism / Figurative Art / Blonde
By Stephen Wright
Located in New York, NY
The individuals in Stephen Wright’s work confront us visually and psychologically. His paintings tend to transfix. Standing before them, one is drawn in by the intent gaze of a woman, the slumped figure of a nude man, or the averted face of someone lost in reverie. Wright paints mainly solo subjects. They seem always to be slightly removed – yet they challenge, perplex, and attract us. In the manner of the British figurative painters, Wright emphasizes the surface of his canvases, manipulating layers of paint and leaving evidence of his brushwork. Like Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon, and even Jenny Saville...
