About the Item

In "The Cycle of Being: Motherhood Through the Ages," Tetiana Pchelnykova immerses the viewer in a world where art becomes a conduit between the past and present, and traditions give birth to new life within the context of contemporary artistic discourse. Executed in acrylic on canvas with elements of oil pastel, measuring 60x40 cm, each stroke and color accent reflects the artist's exploration of profound symbolism and cultural identity. The painting depicts a figure of a young pregnant woman, a personification of the Mavka—a symbol of fertility and the natural continuation of life. The woman is presented as a paragon of motherhood, framed by carved symbols of Kievan Rus that embrace her body and leaves, which are an extension of her hair, reflecting the uninterrupted connection between human, nature, and culture. Breathing life into classical themes, Pchelnykova touches on the philosophy of existentialism and phenomenology, posing questions about the inner existence and essence of human nature in the context of socio-cultural evolution. Thus, the connection with nature and the world, transcending individual boundaries, is revealed through delicate flowers symbolizing fertility and the life-giving force, cascading from the heavens directly into the womb, indicating the perpetual reproduction of life. The technique of the painting, with large swaths of color intensely utilized in the background, and the simplification of the woman's face free from excessive details, creates a clear focus on symbolic content, offering the viewer a subjective sense of experience and a visual purification from the oversaturation of the modern visual space. The foundation of this philosophical-aesthetic vision can be found in the works of Ana Mendieta and Paula Modersohn-Becker, from whom Pchelnykova draws inspiration to create paintings. Eva's Legacy, Figurative original painting by Tetiana Pchelnykova
Located in Zofingen, AG
This painting is an attempt to blend ancient symbols, contemporary understanding of feminine essence, and profound philosophical contemplations inspired by existentialism and phenomenology. The woman, represented in the image of Eve, stands as an eternal symbol of the beginning of life and the mother of all humanity. Symbols on her body, derived from the idols of the Trypillian culture, speak to the age-old connection of our people with nature, land, and spirituality. The Tree of Life with its apples embodies the immortal bond with lineage and ancestors, as well as a reflection on existence, self-awareness in the world, and relations with others. Existentialist and phenomenological philosophies emphasize individual experience and perception of the world, which are perfectly captured in this painting. Each apple represents a memory passed down from generation to generation, a reminder of roots that deeply reach into the history of our people, and contemplations about our place in the universe.
