About the Item

After Jacob Gerritszoon Cuyp. Portrait of a Child, Early 17th Century The original of this painting is held in the collection of the Städel Museum in Frankfurt. This works dimensions are almost identical to the original, however the original is painted on a wooden panel as opposed to oil on canvas. This painting is significant when considering the role Jacob Gerritszoon Cuyp played in the artistic apprenticeships of some of the most significant Dutch Baroque artists of the time, namely that of his son Aelbert Cuyp. With the canvas fortunately remaining unlined, the conservator's opinion we have sought regarding the age of the canvas arrives at a prospective date near to that of the original. With further consideration to the quality of the finished painting, in our opinion it is probably by a student of Cuyp, or of a contemporary follower. According to Arnold Houbraken, Jacob Gerritszoon Cuyp assisted Jacques de Claeuw, Isaac van Hasselt, and Cornelis Tegelberg establish the Guild of Saint Luke in Dordrecht in 1642. According to the Netherlands Institute for Art History he was a pupil of Abraham Bloemaert in Utrecht, and became a member of the Dordrecht Guild of St. Luke 18 July 1617. Cuyp became the later teacher of the painters Ferdinand Bol, Rafaël Govertsz Camphuysen, Aelbert Cuyp, Benjamin Gerritsz Cuyp, Hendrik Dethier, Isaac van Duynen, Bastiaan Govertsz van der Leeuw, Paulus Lesire, Aert van der Neer, Pieter Hermansz Verelst, and Ary Huybertsz Verveer. Jacob Gerritszoon Cuyp was best known for his portraits. Condition: The painting is in good condition and is housed in a period reproduction giltwood frame. It is glazed with museum quality anti-reflective invisible glass "artglass AR70" which has UV Block of 70% Visible Light Transmission of 99% and a Reflection of 1%.
