Moonrise Over Carbis Bay, Cornwall 19th Century by Albert Julius Olsson RBA ROI RWA RBC RA, British (1864–1942) to $45,000 Large 19th Century view of the moonrise over Carbis Bay, Cornwall, oil on canvas by Julius Olsson. Beautiful and atmospherical nocturne overlooking the Cornish beach near St Ives with reflections of the moons light off the calm waters as a solitary sailing vessel crosses the distant horizon. Signed with exceptional provenance and exhibition history. Painting and its original gilt foliate composition frame are both in immaculate condition. Measurements: 37" x 32" framed approx Provenance: Messums, London, private collection Exhibited:Messums, London, 'High Tide: Paintings from Newlyn and St Ives including an Important Collection of Works by Julius Olsson 1864-1942', Autumn 201 Biography Julius Olsson worked in business for four years before he devoted himself to painting, without any training. He travelled, particularly by sea, collecting numerous studies. In 1890 he settled in St Ives. He began participating in exhibitions in London in 1888; then, from 1892 onward, became a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy. He also took part in the Salon de Paris: in 1900 he received an honourable mention at the Exposition Universelle, and in 1903 was awarded a third-class medal. He was a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Essentially a painter of seascapes, he was most fond of sunsets and moonlight.
