Die Arbeit von Albert Bertalan war ein Spontankauf aufgrund der offensichtlichen Qualität der Arbeit, noch bevor ich etwas über den Künstler recherchieren konnte. Das Label „Ecole de Paris“ steht für sehr viel, vor allem aber für eine weltweit aufstrebende Künstlergeneration, die in Paris ihren letzten Schliff bekommen hat unddas sieht man. Realistische Porträts aus dieser Zeit gibt es viele, aber nur wenige schaffen mit reduzierten Mitteln Anmut und Eleganz zu vermitteln, wie diese Arbeit.
Das Gemälde stammt aus der besten Zeit Albert Bertalans, der von 1926 bis 1930 im Salon des Independants, 1926 Salon d‘Automne in 1926 und 1930 Salon des Tuileries jeweils in Paris ausstellt. Das Porträt zeigt eine junge Frau, typisch für ihre Zeit mit modischem Haarschnitt. Eine junge Frau, wie man meint, sie bei Zeitgenossen wie Modigliani oder Balthus gesehen haben zu können – und zugleich doch nicht: Wo Sujet, Reduziertheit der Gestaltung und Farbigkeit eine Gemeinsamkeit darstellen, hebt sich das außergewöhnliche Damenporträt Bertalans dennoch deutlich von vegleichbaren Darstellungen ab. Es sind die Schlichtheit und Eleganz, durch die das Gmälde bereits auf den ersten Blick besticht, der weiche Lichteinfall, der dennoch klare Konturen zum Vorschein bringt, die helle Zartheit des Gesichts neben dem dunklen, beschwingt das Gesicht umspielenden Haar. Je länger man das Gemälde betrachtet, desto mehr Gegensätze wird man finden; und doch handelt es sich hier um ein so ausgewogenes Gemisch, dass die Spannungsverhältnisse in einem ruhigen, ausgewogenen Ganzen resultieren, das den vermeintlichen Charakter der jungen Frau zu unterstreichen scheint. Das Porträt bildet ein klares Zeugnis Bertalans Blütezeit.
