Alice Mumford Roberts (1875-1950) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,. where she studied the fine arts under Joseph DeCamp, Carl Newman, and Robert Henri. She went to Europe in 1898 to study with the painter Marie Haughton. Alice Mumford lived in Spain for two years, continuing her painting studies with José Mara López Mezquita, who would also capture their photos together. She then later proceeded to Paris, where she participated in the Salon of 1900 before spending two years in London. He returned to the United States after these formative travels and established himself as a portrait artist. In 1906 and 1910, he was the Mary Smith Prize winner.
In 1920, Alice married the famous Ethnographer Steward Culin, curator of the Museum of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, and she lived and worked in Brooklyn until the death of her husband in 1929. She moved to Miami in 1930, where she lived and worked until her death.

Description
During her expatriate career, between the mid-1880s and return to the United States in 1920, painter and muralist Mary Fairchild MacMonnies (later Low) was one of the most successful American women artists of her generation. Mary Fairchild was born in Connecticut, but was raised largely in St. Louis, Missouri. Inspired by her mother's work as a painter of miniatures and dissatisfied as a school teacher, she enrolled in the St. Louis School of Fine Arts, where she led a movement for women to be permitted to draw model posed in the nude, an important component of artistic training then considered improper for well-bred young women.
