About the Item

"This picture continues the series of works “Children of the World”, for which I select children, representatives of the most interesting nationalities who, in our age of globalization, have managed to preserve their own culture and traditions, their unique costumes, headdresses, hairstyles, etc." said Anna about this painting. "The “Longhorn Miao” are a small tribe, there are only about 5,000 of them. They managed not to dissolve in the crowd and preserve their unique tradition, leaving the accumulated wealth of hair to their daughters and granddaughters. In front of us sits a girl from a remote village in China, a smart representative of the Miao tribe. On the girl's head is Chang Jiao - something between a wig and a huge headdress, consisting of a wooden comb in the shape of a crescent (or horn), which is attached to the neck and around which the hair is wrapped. But it is not their own hair, but the property of their maternal ancestors. According to their beliefs, hair cannot be thrown away. It is like throwing away the experience and strength of your family with your own hands. It is much better to pass this power on to your ancestor. After each combing, the girls remove the fallen hair from the comb and put it in their "hair bank". This will be their legacy for posterity. Miao women collect and store this hair with amazing care for almost their entire lives, hoping to make one day a fancy headdress out of it. The finished product is passed down from mother to daughter, so many Miao women wear Chang Jiao that originally belonged to their great-grandmothers. The wooden comb around which the wig is braided closely resembles a horn in its appearance, which is why people are often called "Long-horned Miao". "Horns" are considered the richer the more hair has accumulated for this headdress. It is said, "this is how my ancestors took care of me. I have such a glorious family!". The painting is made in the style of modern impressionism in acrylic and oil on canvas using the highest quality materials. It is ready to hang on the wall and comes with hooks. Miao Girl depicts a young Miao girl in her native costume. This was painted from a trip to China. The Miao are a group of linguistically-related peoples living in Southern China and Southeast Asia, which are recognized by the government of China as one of the 56 official ethnic groups. The Miao live primarily in southern China's mountains, in the provinces of Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangxi, Guangdong, and Hainan. Some sub-groups of the Miao, most notably the Hmong people, have migrated out of China into Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Northern Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand) Miao women demonstrate great skill and artistry when making traditional clothing and handicrafts. They excel at embroidering, weaving, paper-cutting, batik, and intricate jewelry casting. From vests, coats, hats, collars and cuffs, to full skirts, and baby carriers, the patterns on their clothes are extremely complicated and colorful with clean lines. Girls of around seven will learn embroidering from mothers and sisters, and by the time they are teenagers, they are quite deft. Additionally, Miao silver jewelry...

This artwork "Little Chinese Girl" 1982 in a color off set lithograph by renown Chinese/American artist Wai Ming A.K.A Lo Hing Kwok, b.1938. It is hand signed an inscribed A.C (Hors Commerce) in pencil by the artist. The image size is 24.5 x 22 inches, sheet size is 28 x 24.5 inches. It is in excellent condition, has never been framed. About the artist: Wai Ming, was born in Canton, South China on November 11, 1938, the son of a school master with nine children. Extremely poor as a child, he was raised in Hong Kong enduring many hardships amidst a chaotic environment of war and refugee settlements. Wai Ming's love for art flourished and he developed his drawing techniques without any art education, just painting what he saw. In the 1960s, Ming found representation in Hong Kong and also took the unusual step of opening his own gallery to display his work in. His primary interest being to capture images of life in fishing villages, or 'fish-folk', who have retained traditional Chinese culture, his work was at home with the sensibilities of many art buyers in Hong Kong. Crossing the ocean in his mid-30s, Wai Ming arrived in San Francisco from Hong Kong in 1974. There, he experienced initial resistance from galleries and the official art world for a variety of reasons, but was ultimately embraced by dealer Jack Swanson...
