Enoch Seeman
Portrait of a Lady

c. 1720

Attributed to Enoch Seeman (Poland 1661-1745 London). Portrait of a Lady, seated in a landscape wearing a white gown with red cloak. C. 1720. Oil on canvas in a period giltwood frame. Enoch Seeman the Younger (1661-1745) was born in Danzig in Poland. His father, Enoch the Elder was also a painter. His father brought him to London in 1704 where he painted a group portrait of the Bissett family - his style heavily influenced by that of Godfrey Kneller. He became a painter to the British Court and in 1730 he completed portraits of George I in his coronation robes and also of George II some years later. His last and largest work was of 'The Lady Cust and her nine children' in 1743, now at Belton House in Lincolnshire.
