About the Item

This charming British Victorian genre oil painting is by noted exhibited artist Henry Tuner Munns. It was painted in 1865 in realist palette with superb detail in the young boy's face and heavy impasto on his clothing. The subject is a boy in ragged clothing sat on stone steps outside an office, with his cap out for money, still empty. He has with him a wooded guinea pig cage with a large favoured guinea pig on top being hand fed scraps, its young inside. Munns was clearly sympathetic to the plight of the poor in Victorian England, if painting it in a romanticised golden glow, along side compassion for animals. A lovely painting for guinea pig enthusiasts. Signed and dated 1865 lower left. Provenance. Titled verso The Favoured Guinea Pig. Condition. Oil on canvas, unframed size is 30 inches by 24 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in an arched slip ornate gilt 19th century frame. Framed size is 40 inches by 34 inches and in good condition. Henry Turner Munns, (1832-1898), was a Birmingham born artist who specialised in portraits, landscapes, figures and genre subjects. He exhibited from 1882-97 and was father of artist Bernard Munns. Exhibited: Royal Society of Artists Birmingham 47, Glasgow Institute of Fine Art 1, Walker Art Gallery Liverpool 7, Manchester Art Gallery 5, Royal Academy 8.

Out of Mischief - British Victorian 1891 art interior portrait oil painting
Located in London, GB
This absolutely charming exhibited British Victorian oil painting is by female artist Maria Louisa Angus. Painted in 1891, it was exhibited at the Royal Academy that same year. The composition is an interior scene with two young girls on a sofa, looking at a picture book and keeping 'out of mischief' as it is entitled. The room holds an exotic mix of oriental objects and a gorgeous umbrella plant in a gleaming terracotta pot. The girls themselves are sat on a beautifully detailed fur throw, looking at a book, with a marine painting on the wall behind them. The brushwork and colouring are superb and the pink of the older girl's dress is picked up throughout the room. A really lovely painting by a very talented Victorian female artist. Signed and dated M.L. Angus 1891 lower left. Provenance. Exhibited at the London, Royal Academy, 1891, no. 841 entitled Out of Mischief. Anonymous, sale, Doyle, New York, May 20, 1998, lot 161, illustrated. Private collection, Newport, Rhode Island. Condition. Oil on canvas, 27 inches by 20 inches unframed and in good condition. Young Man with Two Dogs in a Landscape - British Edwardian art oil painting
Located in London, GB
This superb British Edwardian figurative landscape oil painting is by noted animal artist Edwin Noble. Painted in 1904 it is a large and detailed painting of a young man, kneeling in a grassy thicket with his two dogs, a lurcher and terrier. He is restraining the dogs whilst his ferret goes down a rabbit hole in the hedgerow. Two dead rabbits are already lying on the grass beside them. Beyond is a county landscape of fields and trees. The young man in his stripped shirt and waistcoat and the two white dogs really stand out in the mass of greenery around them as do the white wild flowers at their feet. The detail and brushwork are superb. This is an excellent example of Edwin Noble's work as an animal painter in the Edwardian period and also depicts country pursuits. Signed and dated Edwin Noble 04 lower right. Provenance. From the collection of Derek Parker and Peter Wynne Morris, Interior designers, antique dealers and collectors over sixty years. Condition. Oil on canvas. Image size 50 inches by 40 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a complementary frame, 54 inches by 44 inches and in good condition. John Edwin Noble (1876-1961).
