Signature Bottom right Information Isaac lazarus Israëls was born in Amsterdam and died in The Hague. He was one of the most prominent Dutch painters belonging to the group of Amsterdam Impressionists. He was best known for his paintings but also for his drawings, water colours, pastels, etchings and lithos. Isaac Israëls was trained in the studio of Jozef Israëls, Isaac’s father, one of the Masters of the The Hague School and he went for further training to the Academy in The Hague from 1880 till 1882. For the rest of his years he remained self-taught, next to his father. He entered his first work “Military Burial” to the “Salon des Artistes Franςais” in Paris. He studied at the Academy of Art in Amsterdam for a short while in 1886, but he was sent away as he was by then fully accomplished. He remained in Amsterdam till 1908. It was here that he became acquainted with fashionable city life. He met George Breitner and Willem de Zwart who were to become his painter friends. Israëls became the painter of the sophisticated city nightlife. He had a free, flamboyant, impressionistic touch. In 1904 he took his easel outdoors for the first time to take up en plein air painting in order to try and capture the effects of the immediate daylight while painting beach and dune views. Isaac Israëls and the German painter Max Liebermann often worked together in Scheveningen. Thérѐse Schwartz introduced him into the world of fashion and Israëls devoted himself to the subject of fashion models and seamstresses. From 1905 till 1913 Israëls lived in Paris where he was impressed by Edgar Degas and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s work. He owned a studio at the Boulevard de Clichy. Here he painted the typical Paris subjects: people in parks, cafés, cabarets and bistros and also acrobats who worked in the circus or fun-fair. It was also in Paris that he made his paintings of life in the fashion workshops of the French fashion designer Jeanne Paquin. During his stay in Paris he took part in one exhibition only, in 1909. From 1913 till 1915 he lived in London. Here he was very much interested in horsemen at Rotten Row and in young dancers at the School of Ballet. In 1921 he travelled to the Dutch East Indies. He mainly stayed in Batavia(now North Jakarta) at Buitenzorg (now Bogor), Yogjakarta and Solo where he was a guest at the court of Mangkunagara after he had been introduced to him by the dancer Raden Mas Yojana whom he had met in The Netherlands. With the Veth family he also visited Bali. In 1923 he returned to The Hague. He settled at Koninginnegracht 2 in The Hague, his parents’ house. His parents had lived at number 6. Isaac and his father each had a studio in the coach house at number 2. In 1928 Isaac won a medal in an Art Tournament, in the category painting. His winning painting was “Horseman in red tailcoat” ( also titled Horseman in red coat or red rider or red horseman). His technique, not devoid of French influence, led to the lasting fame of the Amsterdam Impressionists.
