About the Item
Large scale colourful figurative portrait of a fashionable lady in a blue hat by French artist Jean-Louis Dubuc. The painting is signed bottom right and titled to the rear cross stretcher. The work is presented in a fine gilt carved wood frame.
A wonderfully exuberant portrait of a 'lady of quality' in her fine feather-edged gown and fashionable hat sitting in a stylish interior next to an extravagant arrangement of flowers in a blue vase. Reminiscent of the earlier portraits of Jean-Gabriel Domergue, Raoul Dufy, Matisse and Derain, Dubuc has used a bright and joyful colour palette while still retaining a careful balance of tones and colour harmony. An extremely accomplished and powerful painting which would be a centrepiece in any setting.
Jean-Gabriel Lebuc was born in 1946 in Bordeaux (Gironde) he studied at the School of Fine arts. He was an admirer of Marty, one of his teachers and decorator of the Paris Opera and the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux. The latter taught him pictorial techniques relating to decorative art. He was an admirer of Raoul Dufy, but also of the Cobra group.
Jean-Louis Dubuc likes to make us travel through colourful scenes of life, windows wide open to the sea, to dream and escape ... Its elegant women, its moving orchestras as well as its circuses transport us to the atmosphere of the 1900s.
